The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the new system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. Last year the research of one hundred and fifty four UK universities was assessed with thirty percent of submissions judged to be world-leading. The four UK higher education funding bodies allocate over 2 billion ponds per year of research funding to universities, in 2015-16 and beyond. REF exercise will be informing the distribution of funds on the basis of quality and impact of research in all disciplines.
