We are pleased to invite papers for presentation at the SCUTREA Conference to be held from 7-9 July 2015 at the Weetwood Hall Conference Centre and Hotel, Leeds, UK. The event brings together the SCUTREA Annual Conference delivered in collaboration with the Lifelong Learning Centre, University of Leeds to provide a forum for those engaged in adult education and lifelong learning to debate and discuss the theme ‘It’s All Adult Education’.

 

The SCUTREA Conference provides a platform for researchers and professionals who engage with the education of adults and lifelong learning to address key areas of national and international concern. This year the conference theme – It’s All Adult Education – is also seeking to reach out to those researchers and practitioners whose work may not be primarily focused on adults and lifelong learning but who have developed a keen interest in this area.

 

Adult education is in a constant state of flux and, all too often, is the ‘Cinderella’ of education and skills budgets. From higher education to work-related learning through to community education, the education/training needs to younger age groups are often prioritised to alleviate high rates of youth unemployment, a key priority for many governments.

 

However, even within this context there remains a very strong interest in the education of adults. There are academics and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines and sectors working in formal and informal settings who may not primarily perceive themselves as adults educators but who have a keen interest in related research, theory, policy and /or practice. These may include higher education, work-related and professional learning, vocational learning, family and intergenerational learning, digital and technology-enhanced learning (TEL), community development, pedagogy, informal learning or public pedagogies.

 

Papers, roundtables and poster sessions at this conference are invited to explore the education of adults within the contemporary context of austerity, neoliberal economic policies, increasing inequalities and also in an era of declining trust in political elites and policy-making. We are seeking to be attentive to the wide range of contexts and spaces where the research and practice of adult education and lifelong learning is located. Areas of interest include:

 

·         Innovative pedagogies which are focused on or encompass adult learning;

·         Impact of national and international policies on the facilitation of formal/informal adult and lifelong learning;

·         Methodological approaches to researching the education of adults in both formal and informal settings;

·         How class, gender, ethnicity and disability impact or inform the research and/or practice of educators working with adult learners;

·         Conceptual , theoretical, interdisciplinary approaches which encompass the education of adults in a contemporary context;

·         Importance of attitudinal factors such as resilience;

·         Structural factors such as finance;

·         The role of the geographical and historical context of places – in relation to place-based and place-responsive research and practice;

·         Creative pedagogy in professional development and work-based settings;

·         Role of reflective practice for adult educators and their learners

 

Papers should locate the research they discuss within the adult education literature and explain its significance for adult education.

 

The deadline for the submission of abstracts is 5pm (GMT) on Friday 16th January 2015. All proposals should be submitted as a Word document and emailed to scutrea@leeds.ac.uk. Further details about how to submit abstracts can be found here.

All too often, employers complain that graduates are unprepared for the world of work. Meanwhile educational institutions frequently find employers distant and difficult to engage with. For nearly 30 years, Anne has been recruiting new entrants to that most competitive and opaque of all industries, the media. She is passionate about connecting universities and employers to get the most talented and diverse people into sought-after jobs, rather than just those with a head-start of privilege and connections. She will give an insight into the skills and experience employers are looking for in this area and question whether higher education is currently providing them. Crucially she will explore how both sides can work together to bridge the gap between education and employment. In such a fast changing world, the jobs today's students end up doing in five or ten years' time may not yet have been invented, but the qualities they'll require are easier to divine.

·         Joint QAA-UK HE International Unit consultation into strengthening the quality assurance of UK TNE which called for a comprehensive database of TNE activity and more overseas visits as part of the review process;

·         HEFCE’s recent report, Directions of travel: Transnational pathways into English higher education;

·         The recent British Council report on Exploring the impacts of TNE on host countries;

·         Soon-to-be-published CRAC (Careers Research & Advisory Centre) research on the value TNE to the UK; and

·         Government’s International Education Strategy.

 

Areas for discussion:

·         Assessing Government strategy: policy developments, progress and next steps;

·         Exporting UK education: how universities and HE bodies can improve and maintain the quality of the UK’s education exports;

·         Exploring new markets and ways in which Government and HE institutions can work together to promote UK TNE;

·         Best practice examples of TNE and key challenges facing institutions looking to set up their own campuses or partnerships abroad;

·         Protecting against financial and reputational risks as well as ensuring compliance with local regulatory frameworks and different models of in-country delivery; and

·         The opportunity posed by MOOCs for the future of TNE and how this can be harnessed.

Output and About Us

 

A key output of the seminar will be a transcript of the proceedings, sent out around 10 working days after the event to all attendees and a wider group of Ministers and officials at BIS and other government departments and agencies affected by the issues; and Parliamentarians with a special interest in these areas. It will also be made available more widely. This document will include transcripts of all speeches and questions and answers sessions from the day, along with access to PowerPoint presentations, speakers’ biographies, an attendee list, an agenda, sponsor information, as well as any subsequent press coverage of the day and any articles or comment pieces submitted by delegates. It is made available subject to strict restrictions on public use, similar to those for Select Committee Uncorrected Evidence, and is intended to provide timely information for interested parties who are unable to attend on the day.

 

All delegates will receive complimentary PDF copies and are invited to contribute to the content.
