Dispositions to Learn and Student Success

Northumbria University, Great Hall, Sutherland Building

Friday 4 December, 11:00 – 13:30

This seminar will draw on pilot research across HE in 2007/8 and current HEFCE
and Paul Hamlyn funded research into student retention.
The seminar will explore:
•       The notions of the 'strong' and the 'weak' student in HE;
•       Professional legitimacy in relation to student development in HE;
•       Learning and teaching strategies for student success.

Qualitative research findings on the value of this process for staff and
students will be presented and participants will be encouraged to consider
strategies for developing effective lifelong learners
Quantitative research findings will be presented to describe relationships
between dispositions to learn and student retention and achievement.
Participants will discuss dispositions that have been shown to be problematic
for the student group as a whole or for specific sub-groups.
Finally there will be a discussion of the retention initiatives that are being
introduced as a result of the research findings and an opportunity for
delegates to share ideas about future initiatives.

INVITATION - UCL DEBATES IN HIGHER EDUCATION SEMINAR SERIES

Title: Becoming Professional: A Personal Learning Journey

Abstract:
The central question this paper considers is how do people learn what it is to be professional and how we learn to act in
more professional ways. It will consider different formats that the teaching of professionalism can take, including the provision of workshops, modules and reflective logs and the difficulties associated with each of these. It will
<http://www.ucl.ac.uk/cishe/seminars/debates.html>consider perceptions of being professional and how these can shift, which will raise the question of whether there are new approaches we can take in teaching and supporting this learning.

Re: Writing Development in Higher Education 2010 - conference announcement

WDHE
London 2010
Sustainable writing development:
Approaches and challenges

Monday 28 – Wednesday 30 June 2010

The Royal College of Physicians, Regents Park, London, UK
http://www.rcpevents.co.uk/Pages/Home.aspx

Hosted by the Write Now Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning
http://www.writenow.ac.uk

Call for papers preliminary announcement

Established 15 years ago, the Writing Development in Higher Education initiative has brought together practitioners and researchers from a wide range of countries, institutions and interest areas to help create the diverse and vibrant field of writing development theory and practice we have today. The 2010 WDHE conference offers a timely opportunity to take stock of these achievements and consider the challenges that still lie ahead, and to explore the theoretical and practical dimensions of the urgent challenge to sustain and embed recent innovations in writing development in higher education.

Across the university sector, the position and efficacy of writing development work varies widely, with some programmes now well-established and integral to the achievement of larger learning, teaching and research goals. In other situations progress is less visible, and it remains the case that much work is yet to be done before writing development is widely accepted and institutionally supported as a fundamental aspect of students' learning and achievement at university.

Call for papers
Papers – workshops – symposia

The 2010 WDHE conference invites all those interested in academic writing development in higher education to contribute to the discussion of the possibilities and challenges of embedding sustainable writing development. The conference will be a place to reflect on issues of sustainability with respect to pedagogical practices that aim to enhance students' learning experience, academic writing as a research area, and programme development at institutional level. It also invites reflection on the potential unwanted consequences of embedding writing within institutional and disciplinary agendas, including concerns about a weakening or appropriation of the humanistic and critical agendas that have been a motivating factor for many who have been responsible for shaping the present field.

We invite contributions from all those who engage with writing development as part of their work in higher education:

  • subject-based academics
  • academic literacies theorists
  • learning developers
  • writing specialists
  • EAP and ESL practitioners
  • learning technologists
  • professional development staff
  • widening participation specialists
  • policy makers
  • students
  • all others who work in this field.

We welcome contributions from the international community about their experiences in bringing about sustainable writing development in their particular contexts.

The presentations should be research-based including:
  • reflective, practitioner-led action research
  • conceptual and theoretical papers
  • empirically-based quantitative and qualitative studies.

Abstracts should be submitted by Monday 15 January 2010. Further information about review criteria and the submission of abstracts will be available on the Write Now CETL website in November: http://www.writenow.ac.uk/wdhe

Kind regards,

To: d.andrew@qmul.ac.uk

Dear all

Please see below for the BMAF Networks upcoming events for 2009:

13th November 2009
Developing Evidence Informed Practice in Markeeting Education
University of Westminster
The findings from the recent AM/BMAF funded Teaching and Learning Development projects will be presented at this workshop; participants will be provided with the opportunity to ask questions and gain further insights during the day. The aim of the workshop is to stimulate discussion, gain practical insights and allow time for networking.

20th November 2009
Preparing for Placement
Coventry University
This workshop aims to generate discussion and debate about the practice of preparing BMAF students for placement. Undertaking a placement is a key component in developing employability skills for many students. In the current economic climate the complexities of the tripartite relationship between student, employer and university bear further examination. How can academic staff ensure that students are well prepared to make the most of placement opportunities? What happens if a placement goes wrong?  Are all placement providers altruistic? Come and share your experiences of the positive and sometimes challenging practices you have encountered.

27th November 2009
The International Agenda - Where Next? Challenges for Teaching and Learning
Northumbria University
This BMAF Internationalisation SIG workshop will feature sessions by Ian Shell (Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching, Newcastle Business School), Paul Coldwell (Regent's College), Yvonne Moogan (Liverpool Business School), Mike Pretious (Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh) and Berry O'Donovan (Deputy Director, ASKe Centre, Oxford Brookes University).

If you would like to attend any of the above workshops or would like more information please see our website at: http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/business/events/workshops or email: bmaf@brookes.ac.uk

Fwd: Streamed seminars & e-book

Learning to be Professional through a Higher Education e-book
How Professionals Learn through Work Professor Michael Eraut
http://learningtobeprofessional.pbworks.com/How-professionals-learn-through-work

Thursday October  15th 2009 12.30-13.30
The value of digital story telling in learning to be professional
Jane Leng, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences University of Surrey and SCEPTrE Fellow
The seminar presents the results of a Fellowship project which was stimulated by a concern that some student nurses underestimate the learning that takes place in practice and have limited awareness of their own tacit knowledge. Drawing on the work of Michael Eraut into how professionals learn through work, I investigated the power of stories to capture and articulate deep professional learning and the added value there may be in using emerging technologies to assist story telling.  A group of final year undergraduate student nurses focussed on an experience from practice which had been important in their professional development and created a digital story to explain what they had learnt.  The students' own evaluation of both the process and outcome of this work has been highly positive. Clinical educators and university teachers also recognised the stories as both inspiring and instructional. It is now intended that the stories be used as learning objects for both pre registration students and those learning to be mentors of students in practice. The lessons learnt from this project can inform the use of digital stories in other professional training contexts.

If you would like to participate in the seminar please contact Susan Wood S.Wood@surrey.ac.uk. If you cannot attend but would like to participate from a distance please note that we are streaming it live from this link

http://learningtobeprofessional.pbworks.com/Jane-Leng  (link available from 12.00 on 15/10). The session will be also be filmed for the wiki.

Learning through Assessment

UK Centre for Bioscience’s Professional Development Event

Learning through Assessment

Tuesday 29 September 2009
University of York , Department of Biology, room M023, directions and map
It is recognised that the type of assessment that students undergo is a powerful influence on how they learn. However, in the concerted effort to ensure that assessments are rigorous, reliable, cheat-proof and able to cope with ever-increasing student numbers it can be difficult to view assessment as an episode of learning. 'Measurement' views of assessment still persist and the National Student Survey highlighted student dissatisfaction with the feedback they received. This event aims to promote assessment as an integrated part of learning. The day will cover the key aspects of assessment for learning with a focus on feedback. As usual there will be opportunities for discussion, reflection on practice and to hear 'real-life' practice from fellow bioscientists.
Travel Bursaries are available for this event - Deadline extended! More information on the bursaries and how to apply

Learning to be a Professional: Using our own life experiences to develop principles for designing good educational experiences
Professor John Cowan, Edinburgh Napier University
Our own life experiences from which we have learnt what becoming professional means provide us with a fantastic resource from which to create good educational designs. This seminar is based on my own reflections on how I learnt (and still learn) to become professional in two different professional fields. Out of these reflections I will extract some general propositions and principles for educational designs that are more likely to be encouraging and effective in assisting learners to begin the process of becoming professional while they are studying in higher education.
The seminar will be of interest to anyone who is involved in designing and supporting the development of students and staff as professionals. Prior to the seminar participants are encouraged to reflect on the influences of their own development as a professional. Please contact Susan Wood if you would like to attend S.Wood@surrey.ac.uk

Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies 5th annual elearning symposium

The Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies will hold its 5th annual elearning symposium on 28/29 January 2010. The aim of the symposium is to try to bridge the gap between the 'techie' and the teacher, giving educators ideas to help them integrate elearning into their practice but also to inspire them to see where the online future could lead. The symposium is always well-attended by practitioners from a wide range of disciplines and institutions. Following last year's success, the two-day event comprises a very practical first day of workshops on authoring tools and elearning techniques; while these are complemented on the second day by presentations to inspire the mind with exciting ideas about the possibilities that online learning offers. We offer attendees a range of content from areas of more specific interest to our core LLAS community, to topics of wider interest to educators involved in elearning. We highlight best practice in using elearning and feature an exciting mixture of research and reports from practice to inspire our community.

Please see our website for information about the symposium and last year's programme: http://www.llas.ac.uk/events/archive/2985
