Dear colleagues,

You are invited to participate in a research seminar to interrogate the interim findings of a National Teaching Fellowship Project led by Professor Penny Jane Burke.  The seminar is open to all with an interest in pedagogic practices, widening participation and issues of student identity (including intersecting identities of gender, race, class, sexuality).  It  is an opportunity to engage in dialogue with regard to these issues, discuss findings from interviews and focus groups with a range of undergraduate students and academic staff from 6 subject areas (Dance, Science, Business, Classics, History and Philosophy and Creative Writing) and share your own knowledge and practice. One of the aims of the project is to develop a professional development resource to help academic staff consider the issues raised by the research when choosing pedagogic practices. The seminar will be led by Professor Louise Archer from Kings College. Please do pass this on to any other colleagues who may interested, particular staff undertaking PG certs in L&THE.

To register, please e-mail c.gallop@roehampton.ac.uk. There is no cost for the seminar. Please let us know your dietary requirements.

Dear Julie,

I'm just waiting for confirmation back on one of the rooms. But the 7th March seminar is definitely in room 1.17 in the Frankin-Wilkins building, here at King's on our Waterloo campus. Details and maps available at:

http://www.kcl.ac.uk/campuslife/campuses/waterloo/Waterloo.aspx

Franklin Wilkins is labelled as 'A' on the second, more detailed map.

Also separate maps from (http://www.kcl.ac.uk/campuslife/campuses/download/StrandMaughanWaterloolocation.pdf) : and http://www.kcl.ac.uk/campuslife/campuses/download/Waterloodetail.pdf

Nearest tube is Waterloo (3 minute walk)

I'll send through the other day rooms when I have confirmation of which building they are in (i have room numbers but not info on which building!)

I'm trying to work up a proper agenda and timetable for the day but provisionally it will probably be 10.30-3pm. I should have more next week...

Thanks

Louise

Ps. Would it be possible to ask those you are inviting for any dietary requirements? Thanks

Changing Expectations of Universities and the Role of the State: A Historical and Contemporary Analysis

This seminar will explore changing expectations of universities through two different but complementary papers. Questions of the relationship between universities and society as well as issues of governance, purpose, participation and equality are raised.

Andrew M Boggs, University of Oxford

Changing Concepts of 'The University' and Oxford's Governance Debates, 1850s-2000s

This paper offers a historical exploration of changing ideas of the university and wider higher education policy debates through an analysis of the University of Oxford's governance structures over a 150 year period. It offers a narrative of wider changes in the relationship between the university and society over this period.

.

Professor Penny Jane Burke, Roehampton University

Examining the im/possibilities of widening participation

This paper moves the focus on to the present where the relationship between universities and the state is undergoing a new period of change and uncertainty. The paper explores possibilities for maintaining a commitment to social justice, equality and widening participation in a policy context characterised by increased marketisation and competitiveness.

Tea and coffee will be available at 4pm and the event will start at 4.15. After each paper there will be time for questions and discussion, followed by an opportunity to discuss issues raised in both papers over a glass of wine or juice.

Event booking details

To reserve a place at this seminar please register at www.eventdotorg.co.uk/events.asp or telephone +44 (0) 207 4472525.  SRHE events are open to all and free to SRHE members as part of their membership package. Fwd: HEA workshop and seminar series 2012

The first assessment and feedback seminar in the Higher Education Academy seminar series is due to take place shortly:

Exploring new approaches to assessing attitudes and behaviours
6 February 2012, University of East Anglia

During medical training, assessment of attitudes and behaviour is carried out using a number of well-established and newly developed assessment methods. In this workshop we will be;
  • debating the validity of assessing attitudes and behaviours;
  • discussing the theory behind item types developed to measure attitudes and behaviours;
  • exploring how item types may be adapted for use in a variety of domains outside medicine.
We hope that this workshop will be of particular interest to educators involved in subject areas where there is an interest in assessing behaviours and the ability to make valid judgments in ambiguous situations, or for educators new to healthcare education.

Fwd: 9000 ways to engage

Dear Colleagues,

The Student Learning and Teaching Network (SLTN) would like to invite you to their Annual Conference "9,000 Ways to Engage". It is being held on 28 February 2012, 9:30am – 4:00pm at Birmingham City University (City North Campus)

The Conference will be focusing on the diversity of initiatives, projects and opportunities that students can get involved in during their time at University.

With the fees rise on the horizon, the SLTN want to continue promoting a positive attitude to getting involved in Learning and Teaching, and encouraging students to creatively engage with their Institution instead of conceding to the increasingly 'consumer' stance.

The one day conference will encourage delegates to share their experiences of active student engagement at their home institutions, bringing together "9,000 Ways to Engage" through the course of the day.

The cost for delegates is only £10. We welcome staff to our events, but strongly encourage them to bring along interested students.

For more information, and to register, please visit the Student Learning and Teaching Network conference website at http://studentlandtnetwork.ning.com/events/9000-ways

We look forward to seeing you there.
Kind regards,

The Student Learning and Teaching Network committee
