THE HIGHER EDUCATION CONFERENCE 2016

 

Partnering EARLI-Sig 4 & ECER Network 22

 

July 13-15 2016 Amsterdam

Given the multi-level nature of the issues at stake within higher education, representatives of major EU and US networks of higher education researchers decided to combine their expertise and organize this joint conference in the Summer of 2016 at the Dutch capital of Amsterdam. Also a number of national higher education associations are actively involved. Particular purpose of this conference is to unite the macro, meso and micro levels of higher education research, therefore covering the scholarship of learning, teaching and organizing.

 

For colleagues from abroad it could be interesting to combine attending The Higher Education Conference 2016 with attending the HECU conference, which will take place at Lancaster University, UK July 18-20 2016, just a one hour flight from Amsterdam. I am writing to invite you to attend the above seminar. Please note there is a charge for most delegates, although concessionary and complimentary places are available (subject to terms and conditions - see below).

Delegates at this seminar will examine changes to postgraduate taught (PGT) education - focusing on funding, choices, competition and the student experience, as well as the impact of the HE sector.

This conference comes as the HE sector prepares for the introduction of student loans for taught postgraduate students in 2016, and as those in receipt of HEFCE’s interim bursaries begin their programmes.

The discussion is also timed to consider HEFCE’s forthcoming PGT Choices tool - due to be launched later this year; and will examine competition and choice in PGT provision, along with the potential of the PGT Choices tool to address this.

Speakers

We are delighted to be able to include in this seminar keynote addresses from: Dr Pam Macpherson Barrett, Higher Education Policy Advisor, HEFCE; Stephen Lee, Chief Executive, CentreForum; Jason Leman, Surveys Officer, Higher Education Academy and Jayne Rowley, Director of Business Services, Graduate Prospects.

At this early stage, further confirmed speakers include: Juan Guerra, Chief Executive Officer and Founder, StudentFunder and Adam Wright, Research and Policy Officer, NUS.

Additional senior participants are being approached.

Networking

This seminar will present an opportunity to engage with key policymakers and other interested parties, and is CPD certified (more details). Places have been reserved by officials from HMRC. Also due to attend are representatives from Bath Spa University; Birkbeck, University of London; Sheffield Hallam University; UEA; Univeristy of Essex; University of Essex; University of Hertfordshire; University of Oxford; University of Reading; University of Sheffield; University of Southampton and University of Sussex.

Overall, we expect speakers and attendees to be a senior and informed group numbering around 120, including Members of both Houses of Parliament and officials from BIS and other Government departments and agencies, university and college leaders; academics and other higher education professionals; representatives from students’ unions; businesses and their advisors; interest groups and the voluntary sector; along with commentators and reporters from the national and trade press.

Output and About Us

A key output of the seminar will be a transcript of the proceedings, sent out around 10 working days after the event to all attendees and a wider group of Ministers and officials at BIS and other government departments; officials at HEFCE and other agencies affected by the issues; and Parliamentarians with a special interest in these areas. It will also be made available more widely. This document will include transcripts of all speeches and questions and answers sessions from the day, along with access to PowerPoint presentations, speakers’ biographies, an attendee list, an agenda, sponsor information, as well as any subsequent press coverage of the day and any articles or comment pieces submitted by delegates. It is made available subject to strict restrictions on public use, similar to those for Select Committee Uncorrected Evidence, and is intended to provide timely information for interested parties who are unable to attend on the day.

All delegates will receive complimentary PDF copies and are invited to contribute to the content.

The Westminster Higher Education Forum is strictly impartial and cross-party, and draws on the considerable support it receives from within Parliament and Government, and amongst the wider stakeholder community. The Forum has no policy agenda of its own. Forum events are frequently the platform for major policy statements from senior Ministers, regulators and other officials, opposition speakers and senior opinion-formers in industry and interest groups. Events regularly receive prominent coverage in the national and trade press.

An introduction to the NUS Academic Support Benchmarking Tool

12.30 – 13.30p.m.

 

The fourth in NUS's series of learning and teaching benchmarking tools, this new resource aims to present key principles of good academic support from a student perspective. Each of the ten principles has five levels of suggested practice, from "first steps" to "outstanding", allowing institutions to benchmark their practice and get ideas for enhancement. The tool is designed to start conversations between students and staff and lead to tangible improvement in the provision of academic support for students.

 

The webinar will introduce you to the finalised resource (some of you may have had the opportunity to feed back on the draft principles at an earlier CRA event), as well as giving you the chance to consider how you could use the tool with students at different levels of your institution. The webinar is also an opportunity to feed back to, and ask questions of, the tool's creator Kate Little, Senior Project Officer, NUS .
