Fwd: Team-Based Learning pre-conference workshops and a Threshold Concepts Conference at the University of Dundee - June 26th and 27th 2019

The European Team-Based Learning Community (ETBLC) is delighted to offer you and your colleagues the opportunity to learn about and experience Team-Based Learning (TBL) by booking onto 1 or 2 of the pre-conference workshops we are offering on Wednesday 26th June 2019 at the University of Dundee

Team-Based Learning is 'a special form of active and collaborative learning using a special sequence of individual work, group work and immediate feedback to create a motivational framework in which students increasingly hold each other accountable for coming to class prepared and contributing to discussion'. It's effectively a structured approach to flipped learning that creates an incentivised framework for students to prepare for, attend and contribute actively in classes. For more information see http://www.teambasedlearning.org

We're offering you and your colleagues the opportunity to attend two workshops on either a beginners pathway (if you're new to TBL) or an  advanced pathway (for more experienced TBL practitioners) all for a minimal cost of £50. Please click on the links for further information.

These pre-conference workshops are offered the day before a 'Threshold Concepts in Action Conference' on Thursday 27th June with Professor Ray Land as the keynote speaker . If you are interested in this event then the link to book this is here

We are pleased to announce our Call for Proposals for the 2019 UEL Learning and Teaching Symposium is now open at: https://uelcelt.wordpress.com/symposium/

The 2019 UEL Learning and Teaching Symposium has a theme of Connected Students. The date of the Symposium is Thursday 19th September 2019 | #uelLTSymp19

This is an overarching theme that aims to showcase the ways in which UEL currently connects our students to innovative pedagogies, through student as partners, support services and the industry to give a genuine and relevant career-focused curriculum that enables advance knowledge whereby students can grow and develop personally, professionally and intellectually.

We are the collaborative partners - the 'academic allies' - of our students in the pursuit of better opportunities for all. This event will showcase your scholarly approaches to learning and teaching that are aimed at: enhancing students' sense of belonging and engagement; harnessing the freedom of critical thinking; embracing the power of knowledge; embedding the gains of work experience; and engaging in the transgression of connectedness (connecting as equals).

We are particularly interested in decolonial praxes aimed at addressing the BAME 'attainment gap'

Interactive sessions may address a wide range of topics related to this year's theme, including, but not limited to:

  • Connecting by Innovative Pedagogies
  • Connecting with Partners (Students and Industry)
  • Connecting to Live Applied Projects
  • Connecting with the Community
  • Connecting Research to Student Experience
  • (Sessions can range from workshops to panel discussions; lectures will be discouraged.)

If you are doing work in any of these areas and would like to come to University Square Stratford (5 mins from Stratford Station) to present, please submit a proposal. We may be able to accommodate virtual presentations too.

Best wishes,

Fwd: Knowledge in EAP PIM registration and call for host proposals open

Registration is now open for the next PIM on June 22nd at the University of Northampton. All information is on the BALEAP website, but just to remind you about the day:

The Knowledge in EAP PIM aims to explore and exploit the existing knowledge, experience and beliefs of the BALEAP community present on the day to interrogate the position of knowledge in EAP, with the intention of challenging the status quo and driving the field of EAP forward.

There has been increasing consideration of the role of knowledge in the field of EAP [with Ding and Bruce's (2017) focus on the practitioner, Maton's plenary at the 2017 conference in Bristol introducing Legitimation Code Theory, Kirk's (2017) 'seeing knowledges in academic writing', and Monbec's (2018) focus on making knowledge explicit in the EAP curriculum]. It would appear that now is an opportune moment to open up dialogue across the BALEAP community concerning knowledge in EAP. To this end, the structure of this PIM is quite different, aiming to generate discussion and enable contributions from the wider audience. The day will follow the world café format, with a call for café hosts, rather than a traditional call for papers. Hosts will lead a room; introducing the room to an aspect of knowledge within EAP that the host feels passionate about and/or has researched (in a maximum of 6 minutes) and then facilitating the audience's exploration of this theme through up to 4 related questions. This format will afford greater discussion and input from the participants, enabling the host to gather a richer snapshot of the EAP community's beliefs and experiences.

Suggested considerations for host proposals:

* Pedagogical content knowledge

* Content knowledge

* Knowledge base of the EAP practitioner

* The production of knowledge

* Metalinguistic knowledge

* Legitimate Knowledge

* Troublesome knowledge

* New directions for knowledge in EAP

Although this is a one-day event, it is hoped that it will be a catalyst for taking EAP in new directions, with long-lasting impacts. The intention is that there are tangible outputs from the day to be published and made freely available to the global EAP community.

The call for host proposals is now open and closes midnight 17th March.

All information is here: https://www.baleap.org/event/knowledge-in-eap

You can also email baleap@northampton.ac.uk if you have any questions or would like any more information.

Best wishes

Qian (on behalf of the PIM team)
