Dear Mr Andrew

I am writing to ensure you don't miss the above seminar if you are able to attend. Please note there is a charge for most delegates, although concessionary and complimentary places are available (subject to terms and conditions - see below).

This seminar will focus on the regulatory frameworks for higher education at a time of increasing competition affecting the undergraduate market in England.

As the agenda includes discussion on the challenges and opportunities presented by new forms of HE such as two-year degrees, sandwich courses, HE in FE, and online learning, I thought the subject matter may be of interest.

Delegates will consider the changing structure of the higher education market - and developments including the growth of flexible degrees, branch campuses and new entrants to the sector.

The seminar is scheduled to follow the publication of the Competition and Markets Authority's review into competition and regulation in Higher Education, expected imminently.

The agenda includes keynote contributions from Heather Fry, Director (Regulation and Assurance), HEFCE and Helen Fleming, Project Director: Competition and regulation in higher education in England, Competition and Markets Authority.

Overall, delegates will discuss:

·         Changing structures in Higher Education - including university mergers and the growth of branch campuses;

·         New entrants to the market - impact, accreditation, regulation and support;

·         New forms of higher education provision, including flexible learning and higher apprenticeships - challenges and opportunities for the sector; and

·         University 'cold spots'- causes, consequences and solutions for areas with low levels of higher education provision.

The draft agenda is copied below my signature, and a regularly updated version is available to download here. The seminar is organised on the basis of strict impartiality by the Westminster Higher Education Forum.

Speakers

We are delighted to be able to include the following confirmed speakers in the agenda: Adam Birt, Head of ACA Development, Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales; Mike Boxall, Higher and Further Education Consultant, PA Consulting; Isobel Brown, Director, Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership; Carol Burns, Registrar and Secretary, University of Brighton; Helen Fleming, Project Director: Competition and regulation in higher education in England, CMA; Heather Fry, Director (Regulation and Assurance), HEFCE; Clare Hagerup, Director of Higher Education, Wakefield College, West Yorkshire; Carl Lygo, Vice-Chancellor, BPP University; Professor Mike McLinden, Programme Lead (Visual Impairment) and Co-Director of Education, University of Birmingham and Professor Sir Peter Scott, Professor of Higher Education Studies, Institute of Education.

 Baroness Sharp of Guildford, Vice-Chair, All-Party Parliamentary Group for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning and Rt Hon the Lord Triesman, Member, All-Party Parliamentary University Group have kindly agreed to chair this seminar.

Additional senior participants are being approached.

Networking

This seminar will present an opportunity to engage with key policymakers and other interested parties, and is CPD certified (more details). Due to attend are officials from BIS and representatives from Architects Registration Board; BIS; BPP University; CMA; Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales; Royal Society of Chemistry; The Open University; University Campus Suffolk and University of Essex.

Overall, we expect speakers and attendees to be a senior and informed group numbering around 120, including Members of both Houses of Parliament and officials from BIS and other Government departments and agencies, university and college leaders; academics and other higher education professionals; representatives from students' unions; businesses and their advisors; interest groups and the voluntary sector; along with commentators and reporters from the national and trade press.

Output and About Us

A key output of the seminar will be a transcript of the proceedings, sent out around 10 working days after the event to all attendees and a wider group of Ministers and officials at BIS and other government departments; officials at HEFCE and other agencies affected by the issues; and Parliamentarians with a special interest in these areas. It will also be made available more widely. This document will include transcripts of all speeches and questions and answers sessions from the day, along with access to PowerPoint presentations, speakers' biographies, an attendee list, an agenda, sponsor information, as well as any subsequent press coverage of the day and any articles or comment pieces submitted by delegates. It is made available subject to strict restrictions on public use, similar to those for Select Committee Uncorrected Evidence, and is intended to provide timely information for interested parties who are unable to attend on the day.

All delegates will receive complimentary PDF copies and are invited to contribute to the content.

The Westminster Higher Education Forum is strictly impartial and cross-party, and draws on the considerable support it receives from within Parliament and Government, and amongst the wider stakeholder community. The Forum has no policy agenda of its own. Forum events are frequently the platform for major policy statements from senior Ministers, regulators and other officials, opposition speakers and senior opinion-formers in industry and interest groups. Events regularly receive prominent coverage in the national and trade press.

FW: Enhancing student engagement @ Cardiff Met, 20 April 2015 - Final reminder for abstracts

Re: ‘Enhancing student engagement’ conference, Cardiff Met, 20 April 2015

One final reminder – before I go on annual leave! - that the deadline for submitting an abstract for the above conference is Friday 20 March.   Any queries, please get in touch with me or Stuart Abbott (sabbott@cardiffmet.ac.uk).  For tickets, please see the link above; details of the conference may be found below.

Enhancing student engagement through online communities
Cardiff Metropolitan University, Monday 20 April, 2015

We are pleased to confirm Professor Daniella Tilbury and Dr Alex Ryan of the University of Gloucestershire as keynote speakers.

Online communities, such as those created through virtual learning environments like Moodle and Blackboard or social media platforms including Twitter and Facebook, are rapidly becoming a principal means of engaging students in the learning process within higher education.
Identified as a prominent aspect of broader flexible and social learning pedagogies (Ryan and Tilbury, 2013), virtual online learning spaces are becoming an important feature of educational provision at this level with implementation occurring both within and outside of formal curricula. There is now a greater expectation for institutions and individual tutors working in today's universities to adapt the traditional learning experience and environment in order to meet the differing learning needs of a diverse, fee-paying student body.  Indeed, flexibility is a key element of successful and impactful teaching that heightens student engagement.
In light of the growing importance of this aspect of learning and teaching in higher education, the aim of this conference is to explore ways in which online communities might be successfully deployed and exploited in order to enhance student engagement.  It is intended that the conference provides colleagues working in learning development, and in higher education more broadly, with a platform to present ideas regarding the implementation of online learning communities across curricula or examples of how online communities have successfully impacted on student engagement with learning.
It is intended that the conference brings together professionals working in learning and teaching development and associated fields, and provides opportunities for colleagues to disseminate and discuss examples of best practice.  We would welcome papers related to issues such as online communities, flexible learning, blended learning, distance learning, work-based learning, collaborative provision, skills and professional development and digital literacies.  We are particularly interested in papers addressing Moodle, any form of social media, and the development of academic skills and graduate attributes through such media.

Please send abstracts to Dr Chris Dennis (ckdennis@cardiffmet.ac.uk).

Best wishes,

Chris
