Helen is a National Teaching Fellow and is discussing the critical issues around participatory culture, digital pedagogies and networked creativity.
The lectures take place between 5.00pm and 6.00pm at our Greenwich Campus, Queen Anne Court 080, Greenwich, SE10 9LS. Pre-booking is not required and attendance is free of charge. We look forward to seeing you there.

Transformations in practice and pedagogy through networked creativity
Over the past decade, the growth in the adoption of free and open platforms for teaching and learning (often termed as ‘disruptive technologies’ as they are not owned or controlled by HEIs) has led to the rise of new learning ecosystems where learners and educators are able to develop personal learning networks and communities of interest beyond the walls of the institution, thus disrupting established practices. Traditional boundaries are blurring as new pedagogies emerge; open and networked approaches to learning and teaching that challenge the roles of educators, learners and institutions themselves. Social technologies and networked publics have not only blurred the boundaries between personal and professional, formal and informal, but are leading to a fundamental rethink of: the ownership of knowledge in a participatory culture; the roles of learners and educators; the relationships between education and industry; and the boundaries between disciplines as networked technologies increase conceptual and personal connections between previously siloed fields. The opportunities for communication and collaboration on a global scale are unprecedented.
In this open lecture, I will explore these topics through the lenses of transformation, creativity, serendipity and opportunity. Taking examples from the use of emerging technologies in transdisciplinary contexts, I will highlight key areas including: digital identities; open educational practices; students as producers; and mobile devices as creative tools.
Helen Keegan (@heloukee on Twitter) is a UK National Teaching Fellow and Senior Lecturer and researcher at the University of Salford, UK. Her expertise lies in curriculum innovation through social and participatory media, with a particular focus on creativity and interdisciplinarity. She is known for her work on digital cultures and identities, social technologies and the interplay between formal and informal learning. As a multi-disciplinary practitioner, Helen works across sciences and media arts, developing partnerships and creative approaches to learning and collaboration. She delivers regular guest lectures, seminars and keynotes on digital cultures and educational innovation, both in the UK and overseas. Recent engagements have included the New Media Consortium at MIT, BBC Global News and the European Distance Education Network. Alongside presenting and consulting, Helen has published in journals and edited collections including the European Journal of Open and Distance Learning, Selected Papers of Internet Research, and the Handbook of Research on Social Software and Developing Community Ontologies.
