This issue features papers on student mental health and wellbeing, improving teaching with low threshold technology, supporting undergraduate research, and improving the engagement with ethics training.  The issue also includes reviews of books on a wide range of subjects in higher education, as well as a summary of key HE reports (between February and August 2018).

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT: SAVE THE DATE HEFi19 Conference - Learning and Teaching in the Next Generation University Location: The University of Birmingham Date: Thursday 20th & Friday 21st June, 2019 What is the conference about? The 4th Industrial Revolution will result in significant changes to many graduate-level occupations. Artificial intelligence will replace some existing skills and tasks while also creating new job opportunities. Knowledge production will become more distributed and knowledge will be increasingly accessible as digitisation continues apace and the range, scale and quality of online learning grow. Global megatrends in demographics, together with increased intolerance of inequality and the fast pace of change in the labour market will lead to new demands for learning that is lifelong, personalised, bite-size, integrated and industry-linked, supported by new, agile micro-credentialing systems. In some respects, this future is already here. In this conference, we will consider questions about the 'next generation' university, and explore ways in which higher education learning and teaching must evolve to ensure graduates are ready for their futures.  Implications for the training of academic and professional staff will be identified, and a summary of the conference outcomes will be synthesised and made available to all participants. Who is the conference for? Academic and professional staff with an interest in and responsibility for innovation in higher education learning and teaching. Where can I find further information? Fwd: 30 January 2019 Power dynamics in student staff partnerships

The next RAISE Special Interest Group for Partnership is meeting in London at the University of Westminster on Wednesday 30th January, 1-5:30pm. 

The theme of the meeting will be 'Power dynamics in student staff partnerships'.  The event will include a talk by Lucy Mercer-Mapstone (Endeavour Research Fellow, University of Edinburgh) on 'Disrupting power hierarchies to build student-staff partnerships'.  There will also be a roundtable discussion on the day's theme involving staff and students from a variety of UK institutions.

We invite students and staff to submit posters that showcase examples of any aspect of working in partnership to be displayed throughout the afternoon with opportunities for discussion.  Poster abstracts should be submitted to studentpartnership@westminster.ac.uk by 5pm on Friday 14th December.  Acceptance of posters will be notified by Friday 21st December.

The event will take place at our campus at 35 Marylebone Road (across from Baker Street station). The building is fully wheelchair accessible. There are accessible and single-stall all gender toilets near the workshop rooms. If you face any access barriers or require detailed accessibility information, please let us know so we can support your full participation. An increasing focus on Institutional Excellence in Higher Education has led to a proliferation of 'excellence' agendas (REF, TEF and, most recently, KEF). Pedagogic research crosses the boundaries between research and teaching and has strong implications for the knowledge exchange agenda and thus is perfectly situated to support (and critique) the excellence agendas. In this context, the Pedagogic Research Institute and Observatory (PedRIO) is delighted to announce an upcoming conference entitled 'What is Institutional and Subject Excellence?'.

Aimed at bringing together leading academics from across the UK and beyond, the conference themes include:
