Judging quality in disciplinary writing: what can students learn from peer assessment and composing feedback?

This workshop will look at reasons for using peer assessment, ways of implementing it, typical problems and how students respond. It draws on work by academics in Queen Mary’s School of Engineering and Material Sciences to engage their students in reading, judging and proving feedback on writing tasks, such as technical reports and literature reviews.  

Paul Orsmond (University of Staffordshire) will provide an overview of thinking and research on self and peer assessment practices. Queen Mary colleagues will describe their practice and how their thinking has developed. Together we’ll then draw on case studies as well as interview data gathered in evaluations to focus on what (we think) students learn from peer assessment and composing peer feedback. In particular we will discuss these questions:

• What do students learn about judging quality from composing peer feedback?
• How does peer assessment facilitate the development of assessment literacy?
• What is the purpose of peer assessment; a way of clarifying tutor values or a way of eliciting student values?
• To what extent is there room for negotiation between tutors and students over how, and on what, judgements are made?

Feedback continues to disappoint students in higher education and this seems likely to intensify with the new fees regime. However, improvement in feedback practices remains largely elusive especially in an environment with finite resources. Institutions and their staff are being challenged to find the solution to a complex problem.

 

This one day event aims to support those grappling with this problem by bringing together expertise in research, innovative approaches and the student voice in order to generate debate, analysis and ideas to take away.  There will be contributions from researchers, the HEA and the NUS.

 

It will appeal to leaders with responsibility for driving feedback improvement in institutions, departments and programmes as well as practitioners and student representatives seeking to improve feedback practices.  

 

The event will include keynotes, presentations and workshops, and cover:

• Input on the key messages from research literature

• New ideas on practice and resources to use 
• Student perspectives on developing feedback practice
• Opportunities to ask questions of experts
• Time and space for participants to share and develop ideas about improving feedback

4th Biennial Threshold Concepts Conference and 6th NAIRTL Annual Conference

THRESHOLD CONCEPTS:
from personal practice to communities of practice

The 4th Biennial Threshold Concepts Conference takes place in Dublin from 28-29 June and will be hosted by the National Academy.  The conference programme is now finalised and includes 60 oral presentations, 7 workshops, 40 Pecha Kucha presentations and 50 posters addressing the following sub-themes

·  Engaging Students with Threshold Concepts
·  Interdisciplinary Threshold Concepts
·  Threshold Concepts in Professional Development
·  New Developments in Threshold Concepts

A pre-conference ‘Student Symposium’ will be held on June 27 for those new to the area of Threshold Concepts. Delegates are invited to attend either of the two Symposium workshops.
