This event will publicise two volumes of case studies of teaching in the social sciences on Islamic Studies and improve understanding of social sciences contribution to understanding key contemporary issues relating to Islam and Muslims in Britain and across the globe.

13. Learning in law annual conference, 3-4 February 2012, University of Warwick

The 2012 Learning in Law Annual Conference (LILAC) will include a keynote speech by Malcolm Tight, Professor of Higher Education at Lancaster University. A full programme of events, speakers and parallel sessions will be released soon.

14. Islamic Studies Network PhD workshop, 8-9 February 2012, Birmingham

The Islamic Studies Network is organising a two-day residential event for PhD students in Islamic Studies and related disciplines. There will be approximately 25 places available for the event.

15. What works? Student retention and success programme - final conference, 28-29 March 2012, University of York

This two-day residential conference builds on the success of the Retention Convention held in March 2010. It will provide keynote addresses from leading experts, findings from individual projects and from the programme as a whole.

16. STEM Annual Conference 2012, 12-13 Apr 2012, London

This is the HEA's first annual learning and teaching STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) conference and is being held at Imperial College London, one of the world's leading centres of excellence for teaching and research in the fields of science, technology and medicine.

17. Inaugural Future Directions conference, 26 April 2012, Glyndwr University

This is Wales' first national learning and teaching conference. The main focus will be to showcase the first Wales-wide quality enhancement theme, Graduates for Our Future, and its three work strands: students as partners; learning in employment; and learning for employment.

Invitation to a National Symposium

 'Enhancing Dissertations and Final Year Projects: 

Experiences, Embedding and the Future'

 

29 February 2012

10.30-15.45

 

University of Gloucestershire

This one day symposium will explore how the dissertation experience can be enhanced. It will explore case studies which demonstrate how dissertations or creative honours projects can take many forms which are innovative or creative in the context of their discipline or institution, and may include group, work-oriented and community-based projects. There can also be novel ways of disseminating the findings: via exhibitions, undergraduate research conferences and other forms of public engagement.   The symposium will be an interactive, fun event stimulated by a few short talks and with plenty of opportunities for discussion.

Key note speakers include: Craig Mahoney (Chief Executive, HE Academy), Stephen Marston (VC, Gloucestershire) and Vicky Gunn (Glasgow).

The symposium is being offered free of charge, including refreshments and lunch, to both internal and external delegates, but because of this, places are restricted and will be allocated on a first come basis. 

 

Final year undergraduate students are encouraged to participate.

The 4^th Annual University of Worcester PDP and employability day conference,

Cotswold Suite, St John's Campus, 9.30-15.45, Tuesday 24^th January 2012.

 

This year's conference will hear from students about their experience of the University's new 'earn as you learn' initiative and from a panel of employers about what they expect to see in graduates' CVs and references.  There will also be the opportunity to share and discuss institutional developments in academic tutoring and to hear from Professor Chris Rust, of Oxford Brookes University, about their innovative use of inventories to enhance academic tutoring.

Dear Colleague

The Higher Education Academy's first annual learning and teaching STEM conference will take place on 12 and 13 April 2012 at Imperial College London, one of the world's leading centres of excellence for teaching and research in the fields of science, technology and medicine.

STEM subjects are recognised as having strategic importance in higher education for the economy and employers. The student learning experience in STEM subjects is vital in ensuring sustained growth in the uptake of these key disciplines. Furthermore an excellent learning experience ensures that students developed the right skills at the time of graduation and beyond through continued professional development. The Higher Education Academy (HEA)provides national leadership in developing and disseminating evidence-informed practice in learning and teaching in higher education; this conference will provide a platform for this for the HEA's STEM disciplines.

The HEA's STEM group includes the following disciplines;

"       Biological Sciences;
"       Built Environment;
"       Computing;
"       Engineering;
"       Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences;
"       Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research;
"       Physical Sciences;
"       Psychology.
(See end for a comprehensive list of STEM subjects from which we welcome submissions)

The key conference themes applied to STEM disciplines are:

"       innovative practice in STEM learning and teaching;
"       gender issues in STEM subjects;
"       Mathematics and Statistics in an interdisciplinary context;
"       work-based learning in STEM subjects;
"       teaching and assessing large classes;
"       assessment and feedback;
"       employability;
"       flexible learning;
"       internationalisation;
"       retention and success.

We are interested in papers that apply to specific STEM disciplines as well as generically, across all STEM subjects.

Abstracts of up to 300 words should be submitted by Friday 16 December 2011 and are subjected to double-blinded peer review; a response will be sent by 16 January 2012. If an abstract is accepted for the conference, a full draft paper should be submitted by Friday 17 February 2012.  Full paper submissions and authors will have reviewers' comments by 2 March 2012.  Camera-ready papers should be returned to the conference committee by 16 March 2012 for inclusion in the proceedings.
