Submissions are open for St Mary's Festival of Learning and Teaching 2020. This year our focus is on the co-creation of learning and teaching practices. The Festival is an ideal opportunity to join academics and professional services colleagues at St Mary's and other institutions for a day of inspiring and engaging talks, workshops and discussions on learning and teaching. The second day of the Festival will draw on the ideas emerging from the first day and provide an opportunity for in depth discussion in practical workshops. We warmly encourage student participation and colleagues from other institutions are most welcome to submit proposals and attend the Festival.

Symposium: Educational talk and dialogic pedagogies: research to impact: postponed

Symposium: Educational talk and dialogic pedagogies: research to impact: postponed

Friday 27 March 2020, 9.30AM to 5.00pm

Due to the coronavirus pandemic and international (and institutional) restrictions on travel, the Committee has decided to postpone the Symposium planned for 27th March 2020 until around the same time next year.  We will get back to you with further information once the situation becomes clear.

Speaker(s): Dr Maureen Boyd (University at Buffalo), Dr Sara Hennessy (University of Cambridge) and Dr Marion Heron (University of Surrey)
The aim of the symposium is to bring together researchers and practitioners who are interested in the topics of classroom interaction, oracy in educational settings and pedagogies that promote the development of oral skills in the classroom and beyond. Research suggests that talk skills of teachers and students make a difference in supporting learner engagement and critical thinking and in raising educational outcomes. And yet, these vital skills tend to be taken for granted by both teachers and students. An emerging field of international research highlights the powerful role of talk in teaching and learning and its benefits beyond the classroom.
The symposium will lead to significant advances in our understanding of the role of talk in the classroom and beyond, and also the creation of networks of researchers and practitioners.
Location: SLB118 - Spring Lane Building, Campus West, University of York

HEIR 2020: registration and call for papers – now open!
The annual Higher Education Institutional Research Network (HIER) conference is to take place at the University of Brighton on 10 and 11 September, 2020.
The international event, in its thirteenth year, attracts delegates from across the Higher Education (HE) sector and beyond, including institutional researchers, data analysts, academic developers, student experience experts, policymakers, strategic planners, pedagogical researchers, quality professionals, business intelligence analysts, management information specialists, market intelligence officers, teachers, researchers and institutional managers.
The conference theme is 'Institutional Research: Strengthening Higher Education Futures' and comprises three strands which will highlight the ways in which institutional research, evaluation and data increasingly play a pivotal role in supporting institutional effectiveness to strengthen HE futures.

Papers are being invited on one of the three conference strands:
•       Enhancing learning lives

•       Influencing policy

The two-day conference includes four influential keynote speakers, all experts in their field, ready to share their knowledge and insights on the current issues facing the sector and how we can effectively respond. In addition, there will be a range of relevant breakout sessions throughout the event, delivered by inspiring HE professionals and academics.

Fwd: Call for Papers ESLTIS 2020 - (Submission Deadline 13th April 2020)

Embracing Failure For Well-Being: For Educators & Learners

In this sixth conference in the Enhancing Student Learning Through Innovative Scholarship series our focus is on exploring the positive aspects of failure in teaching and learning.

Failure has a bad reputation but put bluntly is often the gateway to learning, whereas instant success is often a hollow victory. Staff undertaking innovative scholarly projects in teaching enhancement often run into issues and challenges and have to adapt their thinking. Similarly creating safe spaces for students to fail, allows for reflection and a deeper engagement in learning.

 Understanding this ourselves and helping students to understand it, allows us to create an environment where staff and students can flourish and develop their full potential whilst maintaining positive well-being. Contributions are invited on the role of teaching focused academics in the following topics:

  • What we learn from teaching development projects that don't go to plan?
  • How we enable students to learn from not doing as well as expected?
  • Creating safe classroom environments for students to fail
  • How we place well-being at the heart of flourishing as educators and learners and not languishing in the 'failures'.

We invite to share your mis-steps and mistakes and how you learned from them and sometimes overcame them, so that all attendees can gain a deeper understanding of your own teaching enhancement work. In a new move for 2020, we are looking for indidivduals to facilitate round table discussions aligned to the conference theme, which we're calling thematic discussions and will last 45 minutes.

 Asides from invited keynotes (TBA), contributions may take the form of

  • Talks (15 mins)
  • Snapshots (5 mins)
  • Workshops (2 hr)
  • Thematic Discussions (45 mins)

The conference itself will take place at Keele University and will start on 15th July at 1:30 pm and will conclude at 1pm on 17th July. The first afternoon is free-form and we invite workshops on any scholarship topic, within and beyond the conference theme. A range of facilities will be made available for these workshops, from classrooms, to laboratories to outdoor campus space.

To submit a paper please click here. Call for papers will close 13th April. Conference registration will open in early March and will close in early May 2020. For more information please visit.

 Kind regards

Jane

Fwd: TILT Festival of Learning – Contributions Deadline 20th March

Dear SEDA,

Professor Stephen Downes will take centre stage at this year's TILT Festival of Learning having just been announced as the event's second keynote presenter.

Professor Downes joins us from the National Research Council of Canada and will explore online active collaborative learning.

The theme for this year's Festival of Learning is active, collaborative learning, which looks to build on the approaches we have to the pedagogy here at Nottingham Trent University, for example within SCALE-UP.

Professor Downes' experience fits perfectly with this year's Festival theme as he is one of the originators of the first Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). As we move to an environment where online learning is becoming more commonplace, this keynote will offer a fascinating insight into how we can use online active collaborative learning as an innovation to enhance students' learning experiences.

The Festival takes place on 16 June 2020 at NTU's Clifton Campus, and is open for registration and contributions. We're looking for a range of colleagues to submit proposals which will celebrate the innovative practice in active, collaborative learning and contribute new knowledge. The more a proposal embodies the principles of active collaborative learning in delivery, the better!

You can register for this free event using our registration form. To submit a proposal, fill out our online form by 20 March 2020.

Fwd: Invitation to the International FORUM for Peer learning 2020

International Forum for Peer Learning

New Cross, London, UK

Hosted by Goldsmiths, University of London

28th May 2020 (pre-Forum evening event – 27th May 2020)

The Academic Peer Learning network, and the European Centre for SI-PASS, are delighted to invite you to attend, and indeed submit a proposal to present at the International Forum for Peer Learning in May 2020, to be held in London, UK.

Building on the highly successful inaugural European Forum held in Lund, Sweden in 2017, and the second Forum held in Brighton in 2019, this promises to be another exciting event! You can join like-minded students and practitioners for stimulating debates and discussions about many aspects of peer learning.

There is an initial online registration form to express interest in attending, to ensure you receive a reminder when the forum booking opens https://www.si-pass.lu.se/form/international-forum-for-peer-learning-2020-register-your-interest

Call for Proposals

The deadline for proposals is 23rd March 2020

https://www.si-pass.lu.se/form/international-forum-for-peer-learning-2020-call-for-proposals

This welcoming forum will provide opportunities to explore many aspects of peer learning in terms of theory and practice. This year we particularly welcome the following themes:

  • Building communities and connections
  • Supporting and developing student belonging
  • Inclusive peer learning practices
  • Students and staff working in partnership
  • Peer learning in academic contexts
  • Academic mentoring in one-to-one or small group contexts
  • Peer leader development and employability

Our aim is for this forum is to be a supportive and encouraging environment for both staff and students. To this end, we particularly encourage student co-presenters and have a number of free places for student co-presenters.

Session formats:

Mini-workshop: 30 minutes, which includes high levels of audience participation, exploration, creativity and action planning. This format is ideal for enabling people to think about new ideas, reflect on their practice, and/or learn new skills.

Poster presentation: 1 x A1 landscape or portrait printed poster. Posters do not necessarily have to address the forum themes, but need to describe the peer learning programme or scheme, or a specific aspect of practice or research.

Paper presentations: 30 minutes, including no more than 20 minutes presentation with at least 10 minutes of questions and discussion. This format is ideal for presenting research, evaluation, innovation and/or practice.

Lightning talks: 5 minute/ 5 slide presentation designed as a short summary of practice, key highlights or lessons learnt, followed by 5 minutes of audience questions. This format is ideal for 'bite sized' updates and posing new ideas for innovation that can be shared and discussed in a forum style.

Criteria for acceptance of proposals

As this is a one-day event, there is limited capacity for the number of sessions we are able to accept. Therefore, each proposal will be reviewed against the following criteria:

● Contribution to the forum themes;

● Clarity of the proposal, and accessible language;

● Contribution to practice, scholarship and evaluation of peer learning;

● Involvement of a student co-presenter;

● Active and productive engagement of participants.

For more information, please contact the team on SI-PASS@stu.lu.se

We look forward to welcoming you to Goldsmiths, University of London in May!

Best wishes
