Fwd: Webinar on MOOCs with Andrew Ng (Coursera) + August online conference

"The Online Revolution: Education for Everyone - MOOCs"

GMT 10PM, 6 August 2013 [8AM, 7 Aug Eastern Australia]

In 2011, Stanford University offered three online courses, which anyone in the world could enroll in and take for free. Together, these three courses had enrollments of around 350,000 students, making this one of the largest experiments in online education ever performed. Since the beginning of 2012, we have transitioned this effort into a new venture, Coursera, a social entrepreneurship company whose mission is to make high-quality education accessible to everyone by allowing the best universities to offer courses to everyone around the world, for free. Coursera classes provide a real course experience to students, including video content, interactive exercises with meaningful feedback, using both auto-grading and peer-grading, and a rich peer-to-peer interaction around the course materials. Currently, Coursera has 62 university partners, and over 2.8 million students enrolled in its over 200 courses. These courses span a range of topics including computer science, business, medicine, science, humanities, social sciences, and more. In this talk, I'll report on this far-reaching experiment in education, and why we believe this model can provide both an improved classroom experience for our on-campus students, via a flipped classroom model, as well as a meaningful learning experience for the millions of students around the world who would otherwise never have access to education of this quality.

Presenter: Andrew Ng (Stanford University, USA & founder Coursera)

Hosted by: Professor Geoffrey Crisp (RMIT University, Australia) and Dr Mathew Hillier (Teaching and Educational Development Institute, University of Queensland, Australia).

Building Confident Engineers Workshop

Tuesday 10 September 2013.

 IET Austin Court, Birmingham

Successful engineering graduates require confidence in order to solve new problems, work with colleagues and excel in their careers. It has also been identified that confident engineering graduates are more likely to pursue careers in engineering.  Confidence can also be used to address diversity issues, particularly the gender imbalance within the discipline.

This workshop has been developed to consider how academics can enable engineering students to develop confidence through teaching, learning and assessment.  In addition, the sessions have been designed to align with the relevant National Student Survey (NSS) questions.

There will be an industrial guest speaker and an engineering leadership facilitator with expertise in confidence building techniques.

This is a free one day event for subscribing institutions and has a cost of £75 for non-subscribing institutions. Refreshments and lunch will be provided.

Transforming Assessment Next Live Session [sent via JISCmail – apologies for any cross posting]

10 July 2013: "Towards a framework for games and simulations in STEM subject assessments"

This webinar will explore a proposed framework designed to support the 'routine' development of effective games and simulations for assessment in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects. Currently, providing games and simulations to address specific educational objectives in STEM subjects is a craft activity, requiring custom-built applications and hence making difficult-to-share and difficult-to-reuse solutions. To address this we propose a framework for the creation of Pedagogically Effective Games & Simulations (PEGS). The framework supports the construction and machine-processable expression of an educational intention which can be turned into a computer-deliverable serious game, simulation, or adaptive formative assessment with an element of pedagogical validity.

Presenter: Gary Wills (University of Southampton, UK)

Hosted by: Professor Geoffrey Crisp (RMIT University, Australia) and Dr Mathew Hillier (Teaching and Educational Development Institute, University of Queensland, Australia).
