the future & the global economy?

2. What key employability characteristics do young people across a range

of key education stages already have? Are any of these yet unrecognised

but will be key to the future?

4. What do employers need to do to ensure they get the right talent, be

Student Engagement: Pedagogy or Politics?

A joint event by the HEA and the Researching, Advancing and Inspiring Student Engagement (RAISE) network

Student engagement is currently high on the agenda, but there is a fundamental lack of clarity about the purpose/s of developing students’ involvement in their education. This symposium will focus explicitly on what the motivations for and benefits of student engagement are proposed to be. This highly interactive day will involve the presentation and discussion of a range of different viewpoints. The purpose of the day is to bring together a broad constituency to debate and work together on the issues arising.

Date: 20th Mar 2013

Location/venue: 23 Banbury Road, Keble College, Oxford

Cost: FREE (places allocated on first come first served basis)

It has been accepted for some time that the delivery of a didactic fifty minute lecture, involving only transmission of information, is not the most effective way to facilitate learning. Contact time with students is an increasingly precious resource, and there are now many examples of the more effective use of this time within the physical sciences. This workshop is an update of that held last year and will showcase some examples of best practice in using lecture time effectively, and provide a forum in which university teachers who are considering more innovative approaches can explore their ideas. There will be contributions from experts in such topics as the flipped lecture and the inverted classroom.
