The Research and Policy Team is delighted to announce that Professor Roger Brown will be launching the HEA research seminar series at the HEA York office on Thursday 15 November with a talk on ‘The impact of the shifting UK HE landscape on learning and teaching. The event is open to all and we would like to encourage you to attend the event either in person or online. We are delighted to announce that booking has now opened for our 3rd National Conference: Engage 2012. This two day conference will explore how public engagement enables universities to face the challenges posed by the need to more rigorously demonstrate the impact of research; increasing demands for a 'relevant' curriculum that prepares students for life beyond university; and the need to mobilise knowledge in addressing challenges faced by society.

 

The conference will take place in Bristol on 5th & 6th December 2012, with keynote presenters including Carole Souter (CBE), Chief Executive of the Heritage Lottery Fund and David Sweeney, Director (Research, Innovation and Skills), HEFCE; themed workshops; and a host of other interactive sessions, delegates will be able to explore different aspects of the engagement agenda including research; teaching and learning; knowledge exchange; and social responsibility.

 

This year we are delighted to announce the inclusion of three specialist workshops – providing an opportunity for delegates to meet others committed to the engagement agenda, and work together to share learning and experiences. These workshops are themed on: Creative Partnerships; Public Engagement with Health Research; and Museum and University partnerships.

Dear Colleagues

The Higher Education Academy's second annual learning and teaching STEM conference entitled "Where practice and pedagogy meet" will take place on 17-18 April 2013 at The University of Birmingham.

Higher education has changed dramatically over the past ten years with advances in technology, the changing expectations of students, growing diversity and the increasing variety of higher education institutions.  This conference aims to disseminate evidence based, effective practice and to examine how this impacts on STEM disciplines.

Areas for consideration at the conference will include, but are not limited to;

  • Providing students with the opportunity to learn vital and fundamental lab skills;
  • Improving the employability skills of STEM graduates;
  • Innovative approaches to teaching and assessing large classes;
  • Giving effective feedback to students;
  • Growing diversity in the student population;
  • Practices in peer mentoring;
  • Impact of information technology in learning and teaching;
  • Students as partners.

 

Important dates/deadlines:

21 November 2012 - deadline for the submission of full papers, abstracts for posters and workshops;

17 February 2013 - deadline for the submission of camera-ready papers;

1 March 2013 - at least one presenting author must be registered.

Nominations sought for 'HEA Engineering Technician of the Year' 2012

Technicians have a valuable role in supporting the student learning experience within Engineering departments. In recognition of this the Higher Education Academy is sponsoring an annual award for a technician who has provided outstanding support for the student learning experience in their department.  Details of the competition can be found at;

The 'HEA Engineering Technician of the Year Award' will be presented at the HEA STEM Annual Conference 17 Apr 2013 - 18 Apr 2013 at the University of Birmingham. The winner will receive £150 in recognition of their contribution to psychology education.

At the heart of the Arts and Humanities disciplines sit stories – stories which create and recreate worlds, distant and present, stories which inspire and engage, stories which grow imaginations and expand what is thinkable.

Stories are everywhere, and our second annual conference seeks to explore the intersections between narrative and learning and teaching by considering:

  • the narratives of how we teach – our stories as educators;
  • the narratives of how our students learn – travelogues from the student journey;
  • the narratives we teach – our subjects and (inter)disciplinarity;
  • the narratives we teach by – pedagogies and methodologies, academic identities, research-based teaching and teaching-based research;
  • the narratives we teach within – policy, dominant media narratives, student expectations informed by Key Information Sets and the National Student Survey;
  • the narratives we (co-)create – the impact of the Arts and Humanities, the experience and memories of our students, students as partners.

As stories have the power to 'reveal meaning without committing the error of defining it' (Hannah Arendt) we welcome poster, paper and workshop proposals on any aspect of teaching and learning in the Arts and Humanities within the broad theme of 'narratives of learning and teaching'. We have also introduced wildcard sessions, for you to create your own conference format – wildcards come in slices of 15 minutes, 90 minutes and 3 hours.

Developing Graduate Attributes through the Sustainability Agenda and Problem-Based Learning

This free one day workshop at Keele University focuses on the delivery of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and graduate attributes using an interdisciplinary 'Hybrid' Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach. This workshop is the outcome of a three-year project funded by the Higher Education Academy's National Teaching Fellowship Scheme entitled 'Hybrid problem-based learning: a scalable approach to sustainability education?'; a collaboration between Keele University, The University of Manchester and Staffordshire University. The Hybrid-PBL approach to sustainability education will be explored during the workshop along with links to other pressing agendas in Higher Education including Graduate Attributes, Employability, and Internationalisation amongst others.

This workshop is aimed at educators from any discipline, from university, to FE and college educators, to PhD students with teaching responsibilities, who have interests in developing: 1) problem-based learning approaches, 2) education for sustainability, 3) graduate attributes and 4) the use of social media in teaching. Further details about the workshop, a programme for the day and the workshop booking form can be found at: http://www.keele.ac.uk/hybridpbl/ntfsworkshops/

In various guises, digital presentations of skills and competences, online records of achievement, and action plans with opportunities for reflection have been in use in education for nearly a decade. So what is new about e-portfolios?    This workshop will explore what we mean by e-portfolios and how e-portfolios can support 21st century learning. Drawing on the work of JISC-funded projects and other significant e-portfolio developments, it will provide a snapshot of learning enhanced by e-portfolios in higher, further and continuing education.
