Identities, Pedagogies and Inclusion in Higher Education

This event presents the key finding from the Formations of Gender and Higher Education Pedagogies (GaP) project, funded by the Higher Education Academy’s National Teaching Fellowship Scheme and directed by Professor Penny Jane Burke. Additionally, the event will include a keynote panel of policy-makers and academics who reflect on the implication of the project for widening participation. Speakers include Professor Monica McLean, Nottingham University; Professor Becky Francis, King’s College London; Professor Gill Crozier, Dr Barbara Read, Julie Hall and Jo Peat, University of Roehampton; Professor Penny Jane Burke, University of Sussex; and Professor Les Ebdon CBE, Office for Fair Access.

 

GaP makes a unique contribution to the development of higher education (HE) pedagogies by exploring its relationship to complex identity formations of gender, and other social identities and inequalities.  Through this exploration, the project plays an important role in broader widening participation policy agendas, paying close attention to pedagogical issues beyond ‘raising aspirations’ and ‘fair access’. Connected to this, and with consideration of recent panics about men’s HE participation (HEPI, 2009; HEFCE, 2005), the project provides a qualitative account of gendered experiences of higher education practices and relations, with attention to the complex formations of masculinities and femininities in pedagogical relations and practices.

 

The project took a participatory methodological approach, which involved methods of qualitative data collection about HE teachers’ and students’ experiences and perspectives of HE pedagogies (through in-depth and detailed interviews) and of their practices (through observations of classroom practice). Additionally, the project sought to enhance participation in considerations of pedagogical relations, experiences and practices through a range of participatory methods including workshops, forums, seminars and discussions. The research was designed to create dialogic spaces of reflexivity in which HE teachers and students critically discussed and reflected on their pedagogical experiences and practices in a wider social context that explored the relationship between HE pedagogies, complex inequalities and exclusions at the micro-level of classroom experiences and the significance of identity formations in shaping HE pedagogies and spaces.

19.HEA STEM: Transitions, employability and professional identity: case study in Architecture, 4 September 2012, University of Ulster

This seminar will showcase and reflect on learning activities with level 4 architecture students to introduce them both to higher education, and the construction of a professional identity. It will reflect on learning activities in the University of Ulster and will provide the opportunity for networking and discussion between academics and practitioners.

20.Changing Englishes in internationalising universities: increasing the language awareness of home and international students and academic staff, 7 September 2012, York St John University

This event is being hosted as part of the HEA’s Workshop and seminar series. The seminar aims to address changing ideas about English, and especially the variable and dynamic nature of English as used in international contexts.

21.Teaching History in higher education: HEA Teaching and Learning Conference 2012, 11 - 12 September 2012, Senate House, London

Sessions will explore theory and practices in teaching, learning and assessment in critical areas such as public history and community engagement, the use of new technologies, the interface between school and university pedagogies, curriculum development and the student and staff experience.

22.HEA STEM (Maths, Stats & OR): Induction course for new lecturers, 12 - 13 September 2012, University of Nottingham

This course is designed for lecturers who are new to teaching and the content includes key practical and pedagogic aspects of teaching, learning and assessment from the perspective of the MSOR academic.

23.Inclusivity in the classroom, 13 September 2012, Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh

The Embedding Equality and Diversity in the Curriculum programme, funded by the Scottish Funding Council, is holding a one day conference to allow Scottish further education colleges and higher education institutions to showcase the work they have done in addressing the 2010 Equality Act.

24.Higher level skills for the green economy, 13 September 2012, Anglia Ruskin University

This event aims to crystallise the characteristics of a graduate required to contribute to and influence the transition to a green economy. It will also look at how HEIs can develop these characteristics through an open and transparent education.

25.HEA STEM: Enhancing fieldwork learning showcase, 14 – 16 September 2012, Preston Montford Field Studies Centre, Shropshire

This event will showcase a number of simple technologies which can enhance fieldwork learning and should be of interest to Physical Geography, Human Geography, Earth, Environmental and Bioscience practitioners.

26.Internationalising the curriculum: Improving staff development initiatives, 14 September 2012, Manchester Metropolitan University

This workshop will focus on MMU as a case study to consider staff development to support internationalisation of the curriculum. It is being hosted as part of the HEA’s Workshop and seminar series 2012.

27.HEA STEM (Maths, Stats & OR): Workshop for postgraduate students who teach, 18 September - Queen's University of Belfast, 24 September - University of Southampton, 26 September - University of Leeds, 27 September - University of Nottingham, 28 September - Queen Mary, University of London, 8 October - University of Bristol, 9 October - University of Sheffield,1 November - University of Manchester, 9 November - University of Lancaster, 14 November - University of Leicester

These workshops will be delivered by experienced academics who are subject specialists in Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research (MSOR) and the content and delivery will be discipline specific.

28.Student Engagement with International Curriculum Development, 19 October 2012, Cardiff Metropolitan University

This seminar will focus on a student centred project carried out at Cardiff Metropolitan University and will cover the student involvement in international curriculum design, how their recommendations were put into practice and the conclusions drawn from the experience.

Dear colleagues,
We are nearly at that the deadline for standard registration is now open for the 2012 Annual RAISE Conference. We can still accept registrations for a limited period after August 3rd but they will incur a surcharge for late registration of £50. Note that we now have an accommodation option for the night before too.

Student Engagement as a shared agenda: people, places, practices


This year the conference is being hosted by the University of Southampton on the 13th and 14th of September.

In our second RAISE Conference we are adopting and applying our definition of student engagement as broad and holistic. Our three themes are chosen to capture innovative and exciting research, practice and ideas around:

·         The roles and activities of people in engaging themselves and others

·         The places and contexts in which SE happens and how this is influenced by these contexts

·         The practices of students and staff which foster (or impede) engagement

 

We welcome you to join us as we continue to open up discussion around SE and bringing innovative practice to the fore both nationally and internationally.

 

We particularly welcome students to the conference and note that registration for them is free.

National HE STEM Programme Conference

· The Rt Hon David Willetts MP (Minister of State for Universities and Science).
· Lord Robert Winston (Professor of Science and Society and Emeritus Professor of Fertility Studies at Imperial College, Author, Science Broadcaster, and Politician)
· Sir Alan Langlands (Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England).
On the 4 - 6 September 2012, the National HE STEM Programme, a £21million, 3-year initiative established by the Higher Education Funding Councils for England and Wales, will hold a major conference showcasing and disseminating the learning from its work within England and Wales.
The National HE STEM Programme, which commenced its work in August 2009, has undertaken a series of activities, projects and interventions designed to enhance the way universities recruit students and deliver programmes of study within the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics disciplines. At its heart has been a focus upon increasing and widening participation within UK higher education from traditionally under-represented groups of learners.
The conference will contain over 130 presentations from those who have led the work of the Programme which has taken place within almost 90 higher education institutions across England and Wales and across three specific themes:
1. Widening participation within the STEM disciplines at university level, by supporting HEIs to work with those currently within the school, college and FE sectors;
2. Higher Education curriculum developments focusing upon course delivery and design, student support, to enhance student knowledge, progression and skills;
3. Encouraging those currently within the workforce and society without a prior university-level qualification to engage with further study to develop enhanced knowledge and skills.
Details of the activities that have been undertaken as part of each theme can be found by visiting www.hestem.ac.uk. A comprehensive poster display will also be available throughout the conference.
The conference will be particularly relevant to anyone within higher education looking to enhance their existing activities or develop new approaches, or for those from the school, college, further education, or employment sectors looking to engage more effectively with higher education. Participation in the conference represents an ideal opportunity to learn from the practices and approaches that have been developed, to network with like-minded individuals to share information and ideas, and develop future collaborations.

Registration is now open for the Designs on eLearning International Conference to be held at the University of the Arts, London on the 5th, 6th and 7th September 2012.
