Shaping relationships in Higher Education

Are new partnerships needed for a new generation?

A number of current terms for student are often criticised for their ideological baggage. Monetized labels such as 'client' and 'customer' implicitly reframe academics as providers and producers, reducing the student experience to the status of product. Such thinking establishes not only fixed identity roles, but also the flow of the process governing transactions between them. One way of disturbing, or at least questioning, this logic is to focus on the quality and nature of the relationships between the actors.

This one-day Student Experience Network examines the relationships between HEIs, academics and students. It questions how they are conceived and suggests ways to enact them. What, for example, is the tension between generational politics and notions of partnership? If there is a new 'radical', 'lost' or 'jilted' generation forming (to name three recent books), how should HEIs and practitioners pursue partnership with them and vice versa?

Structured around five speakers, the day will provoke practical and useful discussion for anyone with an interest in student engagement, staff/student relationships, and the way in which the student experience is framed around them. More details, including abstracts, will be circulated in mid-January 2012.

Dr Paul Ashwin, Senior Lecturer in HE in here@lancaster, the HE Research and Evaluation Centre in the Department of Educational Research, Lancaster University.

10. HEA Annual Conference, 3-4 July 2012  University of Manchester – 'Great Expectations – Are you Ready?'

In the year of the London Olympics where competitors have expectations of winning and are preparing to be ready for the challenge we apply the theme to the higher education sector and explore its implications for 2012.There are three main strands: Student expectations and the learning experience; Supporting staff to deliver student learning experiences of a lifetime; and Institutional adaptability.

11. Student Development and HRD in the 3rd Sector: a reciprocal arrangement, 19 January 2012, University of Coventry

The workshop is designed to introduce academic and student research related to the involvement of students as volunteers within 3rd sector organisations. Darwen and Rannard (2011:178) argue 'student volunteering in England is at a critical moment with a number of challenges arising from its fragmented landscape. However, there are opportunities to demonstrate how student volunteering can be aligned with key institutional and national objectives, and thereby fully realise the potential of volunteering to benefit students, institutions, business and communities'.

As 3rd sector organisations are arguably less likely to offer monetary reward as an attraction and retention tool, HRD can contribute positively to lifelong learning, therefore playing an important role in volunteer engagement, motivation and retention.

Digital literacy skills are a crucial attribute for today's students. Supporting these skills in a resource constrained environment can be challenging.  To meet this challenge the JISC-funded 'Anytime Learning Literacies Environment (ALLE) project (http://alle.uwl.ac.uk/) has created an on-line learning resource to help students acquire digital literacy skills, in the form of a learner journey. The journey is comprised of a series of learning objects which enables learners to embark on their own interactive journey and helps them develop their learning and literacy skills.

18. Using simulations to enhance students' real-world learning experiences in Marketing: SimVenture & Markstrat, 1 May 2012, Southampton Solent University

The impetus for HEI's to address the challenge of graduate employability and the need to embed real-world learning experiences into all curricula is well documented. Simulations offer an experiential simulated real-world student learning opportunity in a risk free environment. This workshop will provide participants with an overview of how simulations are used in marketing education at Solent; give them an opportunity to experience Markstrat and Simventure and to hear student views on their experiences; and discuss how simulation games can be designed to best develop and assess student knowledge, cognitive and transferable skills.

Fwd: SRHE Seminar: Leading Professors: professorial academic leadership as it is perceived by 'the led'

Leading Professors: professorial academic leadership as it is perceived by 'the led'

Linda Evans, Matt Homer and Steve Rayner,

Universities of Leeds and Oxford Brookes

Friday 3rd February 2012

SRHE, 73 Collier Street, London N1 9BE

12.30-4.00  (Lunch 12.30-1.15)

'I would suggest that a collective noun for professors should be "an absence"'. This was one of many negative sentiments expressed recently by non-professorial university staff (academics, researchers and teaching fellows) in an online questionnaire. The questionnaire was part of the Leading Professors research project, funded by the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education and carried out by a Leeds-Oxford Brookes team. But the findings reveal what is by no means an entirely negative picture, with some academics recounting tales of truly 'leading professors' who have inspired and motivated them, while others spoke of professorial colleagues with disdain.

The project's focus was the perspective of 'the led' – a much neglected perspective in the study of educational leadership and management. Through an online questionnaire that has so far yielded over 1200 responses, and 50 in-depth interviews, it examined what people think of their professors, how they interpret the role of professor, and how they evaluate the nature and quality of academic leadership that professors provide.

This seminar will present the research findings and provide ample opportunity for participants to identify and discuss key issues around professorial academic leadership in UK universities and we hope share their own experiences and perceptions of 'leading professors'.

Fwd: STEM Annual Conference - 2nd call for papers

Sent on behalf of Dr Simon Steiner, Discipline lead - Engineering, The Higher Education Academy

Aiming for excellence in STEM learning and teaching

2nd Call for Papers

The Higher Education Academy's first annual learning and teaching STEM conference will take place on 12 and 13 April 2012 at Imperial College London, one of the world's leading centres of excellence for teaching and research in the fields of science, technology and medicine.

STEM subjects are recognised as having strategic importance in higher education for the economy and employers. The student learning experience in STEM subjects is vital in ensuring sustained growth in the uptake of these key disciplines. Furthermore an excellent learning experience ensures that students developed the right skills at the time of graduation and beyond through continued professional development. The Higher Education Academy (HEA) provides national leadership in developing and disseminating evidence-informed practice in learning and teaching in higher education; this conference will provide a platform for this for the HEA's STEM disciplines.

The HEA's STEM group includes the following disciplines;

Biological Sciences; Built Environment; Computing; Engineering; Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences; Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research; Physical Sciences; Psychology.

The key conference themes applied to STEM disciplines are:

innovative practice in STEM learning and teaching; gender issues in STEM subjects; Mathematics and Statistics in an interdisciplinary context; work-based learning in STEM subjects; teaching and assessing large classes; assessment and feedback; employability; flexible learning; internationalisation; retention and success.

We are interested in papers that apply to specific STEM disciplines as well as generically, across all STEM subjects.

Abstracts of up to 300 words should be submitted by Friday 16 December 2011 and are subjected to double-blinded peer review; a response will be sent by 16 January 2012. If an abstract is accepted for the conference, a full draft paper should be submitted by Friday 17 February 2012.  Full paper submissions and authors will have reviewers' comments by 2 March 2012.  Camera-ready papers should be returned to the conference committee by 16 March 2012 for inclusion in the proceedings.

Please see
http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/events/detail/2012/academyevents/STEM_annual_conf
for further details.

Note: it is expected that at least one author of a paper, workshop or poster which is accepted for presentation attends the conference; to assist with this, the Higher Education Academy offers a Travel Grant. This offers up to £500 for a team and £300 for an individual towards travel and subsistence - see http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/travel-fund for further details.
