The SCEPTrE Project comes to an end on March 31st and we would like to thank everyone who has supported our work and made use of our resources over the last five years. While SCEPTrE ceases to exist as an organisation the work on learning to be professional, lifewide learning and creativity in higher education will continue through the not for profit work of Chalk Mountain Education and Media Services http://www.chalkmountain.eu. We will continue working with anyone who shares our vision for a more complete education.

"On the edge of reality: Some challenges in using simulation to supplement students' lived experiences.'
Ed Errington, University of North Queensland
Video conference streamed live from this webpage

The presentation focuses on the pros, cons and challenges facing educators using simulated media to supplement life experience of health/medical students. It considers the place of psychological realism; situated contexts; perceptions of teaching & teaching delivery; and, learning and alternative curricula in enriching lived experience. Each of these factors can individually, or in combination, aid or hinder the relative efficacy of simulation as a potentially viable supplement for real experience.  The presenter offers ways that these challenges might be met and simulated learning optimised.

Fwd: Rising to the challenge: frameworks for employability in the new HE landscape - Birmingham and London 13/14 April

Rising to the challenge: frameworks for employability in the new HE landscape

13 April 2011, Birmingham City University

14 April 2011, University of the Arts, London

Dear colleagues

We recently circulated details of two events that are taking place in April, one in Birmingham and the other in London, to support the sector in developing institutional frameworks for employability.

The programmes for the events are now available on our website (please see links below). These events will be interactive and will focus on how to implement strategic approaches to employability development. We have created space in the programme for a series of workshops to allow participants to share practice and we are looking for colleagues who would be interested in leading a workshop.

If you are interested in leading a workshop (either alone or in collaboration with colleagues) please email Holly (holly.firth-davies@heacademy.ac.uk) with your contact details and details of the workshop you would like to contribute to by Friday 25 March 2011. The suggested topics in the programme are not exhaustive and we would welcome volunteers to run workshops on other topics that may be of interest.

The direct links for each event are:

Fwd: Frameworks for employability events

Dear all,

Rising to the challenge: frameworks for employability in the new HE landscape

The Higher Education Academy is organising two one-day events, one to be held in Birmingham and the other in London, to support the sector in developing institutional frameworks for employability.

Employability development in higher education is becoming an increasingly important policy agenda. HE providers have started to redesign their approaches to ensure students develop the key transferable skills and attributes employers require. In an increasingly competitive market place graduates need to feel confident in securing and maintaining employment and should be able to reflect on their learning and achievements and to articulate this for employers.

The workshops will be led by the Higher Education Academy with contributions from managers in HEIs who are developing and implementing frameworks for employability. They will provide a space for practitioners to review their existing approaches to developing graduate employability and consider how best to implement and embed approaches.

The workshops will address:

·         why a strategic approach  is beneficial for enhancing the student learning experience;

·         the content of a framework/strategy and how this should be reflected in employability statements from the point of view of the  student, employer, academic and careers adviser;

·         how to develop and implement a framework for employability and who should be involved.

Discussion groups will consider a range of related topics and will be of interest to senior managers and officers with responsibility for developing employability strategies, teaching and learning developers; careers and student services managers; academics involved in curriculum review and student representatives.

The intended outcomes of these workshops are to:

·         provide delegates with an enhanced understanding of an institutional framework for employability, how such a framework could be developed, who should be involved and how it can be managed;

·         stimulate ideas for how a strategy/framework could be taken forward and/or areas for further  development in their own institution;

·         access/ foster the network/community of practice.

The Birmingham event will take place on 13 April 2011:

The London event will be held in on 14 April 2011:

Please follow the above links for booking information.

Many thanks,

Laila

Fwd: HEA Seminar Series - Assessment and Feedback (free of charge event)

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Emma Medland <emma.kingston@kcl.ac.uk>
Date: 7 March 2011 17:29
Subject: HEA Seminar Series - Assessment and Feedback (free of charge event)
To: SEDA@jiscmail.ac.uk

Dear SEDA Colleagues,

A colleague (Dr Stylianos Hatzipanagos) and I (Dr Emma Medland) would like to invite you to a seminar that we are facilitating, entitled 'Closing the Loop: Conceptualising feedback as dialogue to share evidence-based practice in formative assessment'.

This seminar draws from our research that investigated the subjective processes involved in assessing and providing feedback; and the significance of formative assessment in higher education.

The seminar will:
• put forward a conceptual model of formative assessment based on the literature and explore whether this model has any implications for learning and teaching in face to face or blended learning environments;
• identify examples of good practice of formative assessment and examine how formative assessment can be made to work purposefully in providing opportunities for dialogue between academic staff and students;
• examine critically the processes involved in producing feedback;
• explore current feedback practices and examine whether and how these practices support formative assessment.

It will combine discussion of our research findings with opportunities for the participants to explore and compare their own conceptualisations of formative assessment and feedback.  Participants will also be encouraged to critically reflect upon their own practice in light of the research findings by evaluating a piece of their own feedback in order to enhance its effectiveness in supporting students to close the loop.

The seminar is due to take place on Wendesday 6th April 2011 at King's College London.  There is no charge for attending this event and there are 30 places available on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you would like to reserve a place, please email King's Learning Institute at: kli@kcl.ac.uk

We hope you will be able to join us and please do forward this message on to any colleagues who you think would be interested in attending.

Best wishes,

Emma & Stylianos
