Research Strategy and the REF   10/11 June

John Rogers, Director of Research and Knowledge Transfer, University of Stirling

Sean Fielding, Director of Research and Enterprise Funding, University of Exeter

www.missendencentre.co.uk/s3.htm

There are major changes afoot within the research environment.  Proposals for the Research Excellence Framework are rapidly firming up; priorities for funding are being hotly debated; the economic, social and cultural benefits of public investment in research are being questioned; and, of course, assessing such potential and actual benefits is proving a major challenge.  And all of this against a backdrop of substantial pressure on public funds.  This seminar will consider the implications of these, and other factors, for the ongoing development and implementation of research strategies for higher education institutions.

Examining doctoral candidates   17/18 June

John Wakeford, Missenden Centre

Richard Wakeford, Educational Advisor, Cambridge University School of Clinical Medicine & assessment consultant to a number of medical royal colleges

Clive Robertson, Seddons; contributing editor The Law of Higher Education by Farrington and Palfreyman OUP

www.missendencentre.co.uk/s4.htm

Examiners of doctorates carry at least as much responsibility as supervisors. Yet few have had any serious preparation for the job.  Criteria for success in a doctorate are unclear and there are no standard procedures for the conduct of vivas. So it is not surprising that increasingly doctoral candidates are challenging decisions, most often on the grounds of how they were made.

Such examinations are 'one-off' and infrequent activities for both parties. In contrast, in medical education at all levels, especially post-graduate, oral examinations are an embedded tradition, and serious attempts have been made in that field to 'challenge-proof' these. This seminar will be able to assess the relevance to the PhD viva of these experiences.

We will address the issues of examiner preparation and the viva process, and provide the opportunity for participants to develop new guidelines for examiners and institutions appointing them.

Participants will have access to the archive of diaries of candidates' accounts of examination and vivas and their experience of complaints, appeals and litigation.

Participants are invited to share topics and problems of interest to their institution.

Facing up to the new agenda    1st/2nd July

Mike Thorne, Vice Chancellor, Anglia Ruskin University

www.missendencentre.co.uk/s5.htm

Higher education in the UK is to face the most dramatic changes in a generation.  By July policies of the new Government will become clear:

·         Funding cuts

·         Research concentration

·         Increase in student fees

·         More global competition

·         Possible closure of some universities

We are scheduling this seminar to give an opportunity for a small group of university leaders and future leaders to review, under the Chatham House rule, the impact of some of the main challenges and opportunities likely to confront higher education in the next few years and to consider new priorities for their institution.

This seminar is open to senior academic, administrative staff and members of governing bodies.

Participants will be invited to share topics and problems of interest to their institution. The precise agenda will allow free flow of discussion of these informed by the views and insights of an experienced Vice Chancellor.

Fwd: Programme Finalised: Meeting the needs of... International Postgraduate Students

*Apologies for any cross-posting*

Dear Colleague,

Meeting the needs of... International Postgraduate Students

3rd June 2010

Novotel Edinburgh Centre

http://www.ukcge.ac.uk/events/eventsarea/internationaljun10

The programme for the UKCGE workshop on Meeting the Needs of... International Postgraduate Students, has now been finalised. A copy of the programme is attached to this email and further information is given below.  For bookings please visit:  http://www.ukcge.ac.uk/events/eventsarea/internationaljun10

Higher education is an increasingly global market, as students become more mobile and more willing to look beyond their national boundaries for value education. Many of our universities have been able to capitalise on the reputation of UK quality and standards of provision. Maintaining this reputation is important in an increasingly competitive environment.

Against a background of growing cultural diversity in the classroom, this workshop is aimed at academic staff who supervise international research students, directors of postgraduate studies with responsibility for overseas research students, and staff development officers who "train" supervisors of international research students. The objective is to enable participants to identify the key issues for supervisors when working with international research students, and to develop strategies for managing these issues.

Participants will be encouraged, through guided group discussions, to consider where supervisors fit within the structure for meeting the needs of international research students within their own HEI. They will also explore possible and appropriate supervisor responses to the challenges faced by international research students.

The cost of the workshop is £175 for UKCGE Members and £225 for non-members. This price includes lunch, refreshments and a delegate pack.

For bookings please visit: http://www.ukcge.ac.uk/events/eventsarea/internationaljun10

Students Supporting Students

Your browser may not support display of this image. SEDA Workshop
Students Supporting Students
Monday 14th June 2010, 10 am to 4 pm
Woburn House, London

Ten years ago, the practice of structured approaches to enable students to support their fellow students was only just beginning to emerge within the context of Higher Education within the UK. Since then, many Higher Education Institutions have introduced student to student peer learning and mentoring schemes.

SEDA Special 26 presents five contemporary case studies which showcase different approaches to students supporting students and which emphasise the importance of peer learning schemes. Each example encompasses the deliberative, critical examination and evaluation of each scheme in relation to its purpose or purposes, and the strength of evidence – with particular emphasis on the student voice – from which summary implications are drawn by the authors.

The case studies are positioned within the wider context of contemporary issues which educational developers set at the heart of their work and practice – student retention, student engagement and student success.

This one day workshop will explore why it is important for all HEIs to encourage and develop student – to student support schemes. With its practical focus, it is intended primarily for those who are considering implementing a peer learning scheme and who wish to find out more about planning, implementing, and embedding such projects. The workshop will also be of interest to those who are already running such schemes and are involved in succession planning with staff who may be new to these ideas.

The programme offers considerable scope for small group discussions and interaction, with both experienced practitioners and other delegates, giving participants the opportunity to learn from each others’ experiences and from the case studies in SEDA Special 26. During the morning we will identify why it is important to have such schemes, discuss what peer assisted learning is all about and address the challenges facing student support projects. During the afternoon session, the editors of SEDA Special 26 will examine the lessons from the case studies and present ideas on how to evidence and evaluate peer support schemes.

The workshop leaders/facilitators are:

Hugh Fleming – until his recent retirement he was a senior lecturer at Bournemouth University, and was the University's Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Manager for 9 years. He is now involved in consultancies and PAL leader training to help other HEIs to learn more about PAL and to implement the scheme.

Daphne Hampton is a Senior Lecturer in Learning Development at the University of the Arts London, specialising in research, staff development and consultancy in  mentoring & academic tutorials. She has run mentoring schemes for ten years.

Jacqueline Potter was, until recently, the Academic Development Manager in the Centre for Academic Practice and Student Learning at Trinity College Dublin.  She is now working at Edge Hill University as an Associate Dean in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

The cost of the workshop is £95.00 and will include a copy of SEDA Special 26 and lunch.

Fwd: FW: Fast Track and Flexible Learning Conference

'Getting there by Degrees':

A Conference on Fast Track and Flexible Learning

Friday 18th June 2010, University of Plymouth

Higher Education is being asked to become "more flexible" and to explore alternative forms of provision, such as "fast-track" honours degrees, delivered over two years rather than three, as well as a strengthened commitment to short courses, CPD and up-skilling.  These agendas featured prominently in BIS' recent Higher Education blueprint "Higher Ambitions". This conference will explore the implications of these developments and identify the likely opportunities and challenges.

This will be the first national conference with a focus on two-year degrees and one of the first to consider progress on the post-Leitch agenda. Delegates will have the opportunity to hear from some of the leading figures in these areas and to benefit from their experiences and insights. The programme will include keynotes and workshops from senior colleagues at HEFCE and from universities which are among the leaders in fast-track and flexible learning.

Attendance will be free of charge.
