University of Worcester Employability/PDP conference

 

The University of Worcester is delighted to announce its 2^nd Employability and PDP Conference on Thursday 14^th January 2010, 9.30-4.15.

This will include keynote presentations from Brenda Little from the OU's CHERI, who has undertaken a wide range of employability and work based learning research, and Prof Ros Foskett, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Worcester who has published research on credit bearing careers education and H.E./Business Partnerships.  In addition, partners from across the Midlands will be sharing recent research on PDP, and colleagues from the University of Worcester will be showcasing their developments in, and support of employability.   

 

We would be delighted if interested colleagues would join us, so come along to discuss and share good practice. There will be a small fee of £30 per person for external delegates to cover catering costs.

ELESIG SYMPOSIUM - DIGITAL FUTURES

ELESIG is now organising its eighth face to face symposium with contributions from key colleagues who have been researching the varied use of tools and technologies and have developed insights into the future digital learner.

The event will include presentations and activities on the future digital learner and mobile technologies, news of the second round of ELESIG small grants awards, a members' corner to share and exchange experiences of researching and evaluating the learners' experiences and an organising group meeting.

Dispositions to Learn and Student Success

Northumbria University, Great Hall, Sutherland Building

Friday 4 December, 11:00 – 13:30

This seminar will draw on pilot research across HE in 2007/8 and current HEFCE
and Paul Hamlyn funded research into student retention.
The seminar will explore:
•       The notions of the 'strong' and the 'weak' student in HE;
•       Professional legitimacy in relation to student development in HE;
•       Learning and teaching strategies for student success.

Qualitative research findings on the value of this process for staff and
students will be presented and participants will be encouraged to consider
strategies for developing effective lifelong learners
Quantitative research findings will be presented to describe relationships
between dispositions to learn and student retention and achievement.
Participants will discuss dispositions that have been shown to be problematic
for the student group as a whole or for specific sub-groups.
Finally there will be a discussion of the retention initiatives that are being
introduced as a result of the research findings and an opportunity for
delegates to share ideas about future initiatives.

Title: Becoming Professional: A Personal Learning Journey

The central question this paper considers is how do people learn what it is to be professional and how we learn to act in
more professional ways. It will consider different formats that the teaching of professionalism can take, including the provision of workshops, modules and reflective logs and the difficulties associated with each of these. It will
