TELFest 2019 Livestream

TELFest, the annual Technology Enhanced Learning Festival from the University of Sheffield is being livestreamed again this year, and you are invited!

Starting at 10:00 BST on Tuesday 2nd July 2019, you can participate remotely via our livestream at https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/telfest/live. With over twenty sessions being streamed, covering a broad spectrum of topics, we hope the programme will appeal to colleagues working in a variety of disciplines. Included in the livestream are our two keynote speakers - Professor Becky Huxley-Binns of the University of Hull, and Nigel Smith of FutureLearn - as well as speakers from a range of institutions. 

To have a look at the programme, please visit the TELFest Live agenda. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions via the livestream, and we would encourage you to join the conversation on Twitter, using #telfest. All streamed sessions will also be recorded, so you will be able to catch up after the event.

Student Experience Conference 2019: Bookings now open! 

 

How can higher education providers support student and graduate success? 

We are pleased to announce that registration for the Student Experience Conference, to be held on the 4 November 2019 at the University of Derby Enterprise Centre, is now open. 

 

The conference themes are: 

·       Ensuring success for a diverse student body 

·       Supporting success over the student journey 

·       Communicating for success 

 

Baasit Siddiqui - Derby Alumni, educational speaker and regular resident on award-winning show Gogglebox, will open the conference with a keynote address. We will then invite delegates to attend a variety of workshops and presentations based on supporting student and graduate success.    

 

The finalised agenda will follow, but we expect a varied programme including content on: 

·       Partnership working with students 

·       Embedding co-creation in communication 

·       Effective approaches to transition 

·       Widening participation across the student journey 

·       Approaches to eliminate attainment gaps  

 

To embed our ethos of students as partners all presentations will be co-delivered (or exclusively delivered) by students.   

 

Take advantage of the early bird cost of £75 per delegate until 14 July: after this date, the normal delegate price will be £100.  You can book your place here.

"The Hidden Curriculum: Unpacking the academic practices critical for student success"

Participation rates in higher education grow generation by generation, and as a result the demographic profile of the student body changes. In response to this shifting profile educators must reconsider the assumptions they make in curriculum design taking into account the accrued cultural and social capital of this emergent student population. By way of a keynote session to be provided by Professor Paul Kleiman, participant-led workshops and presentations, and a closing plenary, the event will offer insights and solutions for the enhancement of curriculum design within departmental and institutional contexts. Drawing on research and evidence-informed practice, the event will appeal especially to academic leaders and professional staff with roles incorporating the oversight and design of curriculum, and retention and success for learners.

Assessment and feedback are enduring issues for the higher education sector both in the UK and internationally. This symposium will address the priority area of assessment feedback, focusing on the connected areas of marking practices and feedback processes. By way of a keynote session, participant-led workshops and presentations, and a closing plenary, the event will offer insights and solutions for the enhancement of marking and feedback practices within departmental and institutional contexts. Drawing on research and evidence-informed practice, the event will appeal especially to academic leaders and professional staff with roles incorporating the oversight and design of assessment and feedback with and for learners.

A keynote speaker will be announced soon, with the call for papers and registration details to follow this month (before end of June). For now, we hope some of you will be keen to add this event to your diaries.

Final opportunity to book your place for the 17th annual Academic Practice and Technology (APT) conference. Registration closes tomorrow, Wednesday 19th June.

The conference themed "The changing roles of educators in higher and further education: the shape of teaching today" is co-hosted by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), University College London (UCL) and the University of Greenwich.

APT 2019 will critique, showcase and celebrate examples of academic practice that can inspire academic and professional services staff, working in higher and further education, to develop sustainable approaches to their teaching. Delegates will address critical questions such as: How can we help our students to thrive in the face of a buffeting digital maelstrom? Where can technology create distinctive possibilities? Where might it actually hinder learning?

The conference will be held on Monday 1st July 2019, at UCL and it will feature parallel sessions of presentations, workshops, case studies, field reports and plenary lectures from guest speakers.
