 UKAT Conference: Transition, Persistence and Resilience: Academic Advising for Success, University of Plymouth, 10-12 April

UKAT (UK Advising and Tutoring) are excited to offer their fourth Annual Conference, that will provide an opportunity to explore new research, innovative practice and contemporary discussion about student support through advising and tutoring.   We recognize that for many students the barriers to success (difficulty in transitioning, lack of confidence, time and resource poverty) can outweigh the wealth of opportunities and advantages afforded by the university experience.   Students' development of persistence and resilience can be enhanced by a support network of peers, professional support staff, personal tutors and academic advisers, and this conference will bring together members of these groups to share good practice, skills and knowledge.

 

The conference themes will focus specifically on the impact student support systems have on the student experience, particularly with reference to the following themes:-

 

     Transitioning students:  support/activities and evaluation;

     Developing persistence;

     Building student resilience;

     Academic advising for success.

 

We are delighted to be able to welcome our two keynote speakers, Oscar van den Wijngaard of the University of Maastricht and Ryan Scheckel of Texas Tech University.

Fwd: Universal Accessibility in HE - Seminar, March 25th University of Worcester

Promoting universal accessibility in higher education: The role of information technologies, Seminar - Monday March 25th, University of Worcester

The keynote address is provided by, Professor Richard Jackson from the Lynch School of Education and Human Development at Boston College in Massachusetts. Richard is also an advisor for CAST, the US-based organisation which provides guidance on how best to implement Universal Design for Learning right across the educational lifecourse. Richard has a particular interest, and strong research tradition, in sharing how accessible technologies can assist to realise learning potentials for ALL students' .

The seminar also features a case study from Ashiya Abdool Satar from UNISA, the largest online university in Southern Africa. UNISA harnesses IT potential to ensure a diverse body of students, across a vast geographical space, is enabled to access Higher Education. Insights into sector-leading initiatives within the UK that strengthen accessible and inclusive practices will also be shared.  Colleagues from the University of Kent, whose OPERA initiative won the Times Higher Education award for Outstanding Support for Students, will illustrate how a systematic approach to universal digital accessibility has transformed the student experience and impacted positively on students' learning outcomes.

Crucially, the seminar will also provide a forum to explore how University teaching staff and support services can learn from partnerships with industry, and from initiatives with other stakeholders such as library and information services.  Please see the attached flyer for additional information and to book your place on the seminar.  You are also encouraged to invite a student representative from your University.
