The fourth UCISA Spotlight on Digital Capabilities event will be held on Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 May 2018 at the University of Warwick in the Radcliffe Conference Centre – a newly refurbished conference and hotel centre in the heart of the campus. 

 

The theme of the conference is from theory to action; we will explore strategies and approaches to moving beyond the theory of digital capabilities, the frameworks and pilot projects, to implementation, and ultimately, change.

Presenters from a range of institutions will showcase their work, share their experience, approaches and strategies to help delegates improve digital capabilities, engage staff and students in their digital skills development and instigate change at their institutions.

 

We are delighted to be joined by Donna Lanclos, Library Anthropologist, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, who will deliver one of this year’s keynotes as well as an interactive workshop.  We look forward to hearing Donna’s provocative take on frameworks, models, identity and moving beyond metaphors.  

 

Following positive feedback from last year’s event, we will be running parallel sessions on the first day, allowing longer interactive workshops and an opportunity to select topics of most relevance to delegates’ roles and interests.

This event will be of particular interest to those involved in supporting and promoting digital skills development, such as IT trainers, learning technologists, library and IT staff and educational developers.  We will be updating the programme online over the next couple of weeks.  Our previous events have sold out so early booking is advised.

I hope this finds you well. Registration for Enhancing Student Engagement 2018, to be held on 15^th February at Resource for London, is open and tickets are selling fast. We’re delighted that Nicola Dandridge, Chief Executive of the Office for Students and Alison Johns, Chief Executive-designate of the UK’s new merged sector agency will be delivering keynote presentations. The morning keynote session will include Nicola Dandridge in conversation with Amatey Doku, NUS Vice President for Higher Education.  

 

We’re also pleased to share a packed agenda full of interesting and insightful content from providers, students’ unions, and sector organisations. The presentation papers and workshop sessions address the broad range of conference themes, presenting established practices, conceptual underpinnings and innovative work which explores:

·         Innovations in student representation and student voice systems

·         Inclusive approaches to student engagement

·         The role of data in informing student-led change

·         Using technology to extend and enhance student voice

·         Reflections on ‘partnership’ and ‘power’, and what these framings mean for student engagement. .

Inaugural lecture: #hashtags, handhelds and handbags: enabling students to blend life and learning

In this public lecture Professor Debbie Holley will explore the impact of technology as an enabler as our students navigate their way through increasingly complex and ‘messy’ lives, juggling debt, work, caring responsibilities and study. Technology is not only a tool, but offers insights into the lives of others, and possibilities of building networks and studying in different spaces. What should our response as educators be?

This interactive lecture will be preceding by a one hour ‘suite of innovation’ where attendees will be able to try out some of the innovations in learning BU offers its students, including Oculus Rift, Google Cardboard, augmented reality, Mentimeter and BU’s new Virtual Learning Environment ‘Brightspace’ . Our Learning Technology team will be on hand to help you get set up to tweet the event (#TalkBU), to download Google Cardboard App, Zappar App and chat about their work.

Professor Holley is the Professor of Learning Innovation and the Head of our Centre for Excellence in Learning at Bournemouth University. A passionate educator, she is a National Teaching Fellow and Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. A JISC ‘Digital Expert’, she leads on digital innovation to encourage students to blend and personalise their learning inside and outside the formal classroom. Internationally her work is acknowledged through her research into the student experience and education futures.
