Patrick Baughan, Senior Lecturer in Educational Development at the Department of Learning Enhancement and Development at City University London will lead TLC webinar on Tuesday the 26th of May, 12-1pm UK time during which we will discuss Sustainability in higher education.
Information:
The purpose of this webinar is to discuss an empirical study in which I invited university staff employed in the field of educational development to provide their views about sustainability in higher education. The aims of the study were to: (a) seek educational developer views about whether sustainability (particularly sustainability in the curriculum) could form a more central part of their own work; (b) invite comment about the current Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) Sustainable development in higher education policy. The study seeks to offer some rich data from the ‘educational developer voice’ about sustainability, which could be useful for informing future versions of relevant policy, but that might also be helpful in casting light on the relationship between educational development and sustainable development. The project was undertaken by way of nine semi-structured interviews at six different (UK based) universities. In light of its outcomes, I will explain that educational developers offer varied conceptions and accounts of sustainability, and different views about its role and position in relation to university curricula. I will argue that sustainability is an area that should not be imposed on educational developers but that it provides an opportunity for that community. In addition, policy needs to provide more direction about sustainability in teaching, curricula, and other areas of pedagogy, and here too educational developer perspectives could be valuable and should be sought out.

FW: Retention and success seminar

I’d like to invite you to participate in a free, 60-minute webinar on Tuesday 2nd June at 12.30pm (BST) about student monitoring and information to enhance student retention and success. As you know, I have been researching student retention and success for some time now, and found student engagement in the curriculum and belonging to their academic programmes are crucial. This involves a mainstream and inclusive approach, but it does need to be underpinned by data: in particular knowing which students are not engaging, using a range of engagement indicators.
Starfish tools provide institutions with a means to connect together different information and data sources, and to proactively follow-up and engage with students. The webinar will talk about the issues and demonstrate the tools. I have been learning and reviewing Starfish for about a year, and I think it offers a potentially useful solution to many UK and Irish institutions, and I thought you might find it interesting and useful in your continuing work to improve the student experience and student satisfaction and outcomes.

eLearning 2.0 is a lively international conference exploring technology-enhanced learning and social media technologies. The conference is a collaborative space for educators, students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and policy makers to share their eLearning classroom successes, as well as new developments in their research and workplace. The main theme of this year's conference is "The Paradigm Shift: Refocusing on the Student". This educational paradigm shift is fuelled by the unprecedented access that students now have to information coupled with a view of learning as a constructive process consisting of selecting, organising and integrating information.
The theme broadens the discussion from last year's theme of "Flipping the Classroom." It seeks to showcase any use of technology to enhance learning which requires us to "think differently." The conference seeks contributions on evolving pedagogical approaches, as well as to raise the profile of research in technology-enhanced learning; spread good practice in the use of technology to enhance learning; and facilitate collaboration between practitioners, researchers, and policy makers.

Uxbridge is in a prime location for reaching the transport network that embraces London and South-east England. It is a short drive from the M4, M40 and M25 and has the added benefit of being on the edge of the London Underground network. It is a 25-minute drive from London's Heathrow airport.
