These workshops are facilitated by members of the HEA Social Sciences team, drawing on their specific areas of expertise in these areas of learning and teaching. Where relevant, events also include invited speakers/facilitators, further extending the expertise available for you to draw on. Places for staff from subscribing institutions are eligible for a 50% discount. Places are limited, however, so please book now to avoid disappointment. All activities at these events are mapped to the UK Professional Standards Framework and an attendance certificate, which also provides details of the related learning outcomes, will be provided to all delegates. Events currently open for bookings (details of further workshops will be advertised soon) Supporting students conducting independent research projects in the Social Sciences, 27 March 2014, Maple House, Birmingham Increasingly, educators are having to prepare students to undertake independent research projects that will be conducted in settings outside of the classroom and to provide continuing support for those students who are working on these projects 'at a distance'. The aim of this workshop is to provide educators with strategies they can deploy to ensure that students complete independent projects successfully. An audience with enterprise educators: what works and why? 27 March 2014, Cardiff University With the recent publication of the report 'An education system fit for an entrepreneur', enterprise and entrepreneurship education in schools, colleges and universities is front and centre of our agenda. The report provides a series of case studies, including two by Neil Coles of Cardiff University and Sue Poole of Gower College. This event provides an opportunity to meet with Neil and Sue to discuss the approaches they used and the factors which have contributed to success for students in Cardiff and in Swansea. The event will also enable you to contribute to wider sharing and discussion about enterprise and entrepreneurship education. Curriculum challenge: being a curriculum thinker, 7 May 2014, University of East London Everywhere in Education we see curriculum change and renewal, change responding to external policy, responding to our desire to refresh our Education programmes and sometimes responding to internal institutional requirements. This event will share ideas and strategies with the aim of helping us become curriculum thinkers whether we are taking a framework devised by others or whether we are designing curricula from scratch. Using simulations in Business and Marketing education, 14 May 2014, MacDonald Burlington, Birmingham With support from trainers from Simventure and Markstrat participants will engage with these two well-known simulations in order to explore for themselves the key benefits of using simulations to teach business knowledge and skills. The programme for the 12th year of the e-Assessment Question has been announced. This is the key Conference and Exhibition examining the practical aspects of e-Assessment and Computer Based Assessment and its use from the classroom to the workplace.

The main theme for 2014 will concern using e-Assessment for underpinning skills across qualifications and learning programmes, and for the assessment of functional skills, core, key and basic skills, numeracy, literacy, IT, employability and other skills at the heart of many qualifications and programmes.

As the use of e-Assessment becomes increasingly widespread, we are seeing greater innovation in the use of these tools and technologies, in the breadth of assessment undertaken, in the range of item-types and qualifications and in the innovatory tools and techniques available to deliver e-assessment. The challenge amidst all the innovation and development is how to maintain quality, reliability and validity and ensure fitness for purpose. The conference will provide an excellent opportunity to hear and see practical guidance and advice about e-Assessment and e-Assessment systems.

Speakers this year include representatives from Awarding Organisations, Sector Skills Councils, Professional Bodies and systems and service providers.

The first day will focus on the e-Assessment of skills at the heart of all qualifications and the challenges they raise. Day two will focus on developing solutions to deliver e-Assessment for the delivery of these underpinning skills, Functional Skills and the like, developing robust, reliable and cost-effective solutions.

Bookings may be made for either day or both days of the event, with a discount for Charities, Schools, Colleges, Universities and those in the public sector.

King’s Learning Institute would like to invite you to participate in the 8^th Excellence in Teaching Conference to be held at the Strand Campus of King’s College London on Monday 16^th June 2014. Recognising that the roles and responsibilities of teachers and their students in universities are shifting significantly, our aim in this conference is to refocus on what it now means to be a teacher. While the role of students in shaping their learning experience is expanding, the dominant discourses of teaching quality can increasingly promote a normative and instrumental model of what excellent teaching should be. In this year’s conference we want to explore how inspiring teachers understand and bring their whole identity to the contemporary classroom, virtual as well as physical, with an emphasis on reclaiming teaching as an art not just a craft. An ongoing theme of the annual conference is how technology enhanced learning (TEL) is also innovating academic practice. Possible topics that could contribute to research vibrancy in TEL are evaluating the impact of learning technologies on staff and student identities, the enhancing of digital literacies and the innovating of practice using learning technologies. We would like to invite you to consider what teaching and learning can look like when we seek to embrace the values of imagination, individuality, innovation and risk-taking as teacher?

Pedagogic Criticism Workshop II: Teaching Theory

 

Pedagogic Criticism argues that bodies of knowledge and pedagogic practices are inextricably linked. Subjects are produced in the dialogues of the corridor and classroom as much as in the monograph or learned journal. Professional debates embed and promote styles of pedagogy: intellectual history is simultaneously the history of educational practices. Disciplines as bodies of knowledge are simultaneously communities of practice, performing their own protocols for argument and dialogue. And for disciplines to thrive and develop, these communities of practice need to be interrogated and developed.

 

These workshops are not ‘educational development’ but aim to think about and open up parts of the disciplines of English that are central but rarely discussed.  Designed with dialogue and investigation in mind, these workshops will investigate the meeting of institutions, teaching practices and theories. 

 

Workshop II: Teaching Theory

How do we teach theory? What intellectual, cultural and political questions do our pedagogical choices beg? How do we teach theory ‘after theory’, or after the widespread acceptance of theory into critical practice? What ‘theories’ do we teach and why? What new or emergent theories do we teach? How is teaching theory changing as the discourses of theory develop?

 

Speakers leading the workshop are: Professor Pat Waugh (Durham), Dr Pam Thurschwell (Sussex), Professor Robert Eaglestone (Royal Holloway, University of London).
