Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies 5th annual elearning symposium

The Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies will hold its 5th annual elearning symposium on 28/29 January 2010. The aim of the symposium is to try to bridge the gap between the 'techie' and the teacher, giving educators ideas to help them integrate elearning into their practice but also to inspire them to see where the online future could lead. The symposium is always well-attended by practitioners from a wide range of disciplines and institutions. Following last year's success, the two-day event comprises a very practical first day of workshops on authoring tools and elearning techniques; while these are complemented on the second day by presentations to inspire the mind with exciting ideas about the possibilities that online learning offers. We offer attendees a range of content from areas of more specific interest to our core LLAS community, to topics of wider interest to educators involved in elearning. We highlight best practice in using elearning and feature an exciting mixture of research and reports from practice to inspire our community.

Keynote speaker: Dr Berry O’Donovan [3] Deputy Director of Assessment Standards Knowledge Exchange CETL (ASKe) and Acting Head of Learning and Teaching at the Business School (Oxford Brookes). Her current research is focused on assessment and feedback, cultivating student community and the intellectual development of management undergraduates.

Sessions: All sessions are practice focused and include: University of Kent case studies on formative assessment practice in: Self/peer assessment Group work Assessing practical skills Using journals/reflection Using technology to enhance formative assessment Confirmed external speakers include: Prof Peter Hartley, Professor of Education Development, Director of the Centre for Academic Practice and Head of the Educational Development Team, University of Bradford. Dr Karen Handley, Senior Lecturer in HRM and Organisational Behaviour and a Fellow at the Brookes Centre for Teaching and Learning. Her particular interest is in student engagement with feedback.

Aim An opportunity for staff from all departments to share practical ideas to enhance formative assessment in line with the current University enhancement theme.	Who should attend? The conference will explore the ways in which assessment impacts on
students’ experiences of learning and ways of improving learning via
assessment in all sectors of education (higher education, early years, primary,
secondary and further education), different disciplines and different
educational systems.  Submissions can focus on assessment cultures and
assessment reform more broadly as well as research on specific innovations in
assessment, including e-assessment.  The conference will be of interest to
both education researchers and practitioners with an interest in assessment.
