Fwd: Forthcoming Advance HE Symposia

Thursday 18th July, 10am-4.30pm
"The Hidden Curriculum: Unpacking the academic practices critical for student success"

Participation rates in higher education grow generation by generation, and as a result the demographic profile of the student body changes. In response to this shifting profile educators must reconsider the assumptions they make in curriculum design taking into account the accrued cultural and social capital of this emergent student population. By way of a keynote session to be provided by Professor Paul Kleiman, participant-led workshops and presentations, and a closing plenary, the event will offer insights and solutions for the enhancement of curriculum design within departmental and institutional contexts. Drawing on research and evidence-informed practice, the event will appeal especially to academic leaders and professional staff with roles incorporating the oversight and design of curriculum, and retention and success for learners.

We are still accepting submissions for papers or workshops at this event (but only for a few more days).

For further information, to submit, or to register to attend, please visit:

Thursday 24th October, 10am-4.30pm
"On your marks: re-evaluating feedback and marking practices"

Assessment and feedback are enduring issues for the higher education sector both in the UK and internationally. This symposium will address the priority area of assessment feedback, focusing on the connected areas of marking practices and feedback processes. By way of a keynote session, participant-led workshops and presentations, and a closing plenary, the event will offer insights and solutions for the enhancement of marking and feedback practices within departmental and institutional contexts. Drawing on research and evidence-informed practice, the event will appeal especially to academic leaders and professional staff with roles incorporating the oversight and design of assessment and feedback with and for learners.

A keynote speaker will be announced soon, with the call for papers and registration details to follow this month (before end of June). For now, we hope some of you will be keen to add this event to your diaries.

About the theme

Media organisations are engaging in reflection about what it means to be diverse. What does it mean to give people from different communities an effective voice in the 21st century media? This has theoretical and methodological implications media education: where are diversity and voice to be located in terms of our study of producers, texts and audiences? Responding to these questions invites interdisciplinary, self-reflexive and practice-based research.

The organisers are particularly interested in presentations on these topics:

  • Defining, measuring, and evaluating diversity
  • Performativity and pedagogy
  • Inclusion, access and agency
  • National and institutional policy initiatives
  • Meeting diverse educational needs
