Judging quality in disciplinary writing: what can students learn from peer assessment and composing feedback?

On 30 May 2012 10.00 – 15.30

In G.O. Jones Building Room 6.02, Queen Mary University of London, Mile End Road, London , E1 4NS

This workshop will look at reasons for using peer assessment, ways of implementing it, typical problems and how students respond. It draws on work by academics in Queen Mary’s School of Engineering and Material Sciences to engage their students in reading, judging and proving feedback on writing tasks, such as technical reports and literature reviews.  

Paul Orsmond (University of Staffordshire) will provide an overview of thinking and research on self and peer assessment practices. Queen Mary colleagues will describe their practice and how their thinking has developed. Together we’ll then draw on case studies as well as interview data gathered in evaluations to focus on what (we think) students learn from peer assessment and composing peer feedback. In particular we will discuss these questions:

  • What do students learn about judging quality from composing peer feedback?
  • How does peer assessment facilitate the development of assessment literacy?
  • What is the purpose of peer assessment; a way of clarifying tutor values or a way of eliciting student values?
  • To what extent is there room for negotiation between tutors and students over how, and on what, judgements are made?
