Fwd: Student Engagement: How does that work?

Please circulate details of the event below if this could be of interest to colleagues. Details can be found at the University of Northumbria website (http://www.northumbria.ac.uk/sd/central/ar/lts/events/studengagment/)

A one day event to consider what we mean by 'student engagement' and how it works. What do we mean by 'student engagement'? Does it adequately reflect the idea of students making a 'psychological investment in their learning', or is it just another buzzword spawned by the educational intelligentsia? Whatever it is, student engagement is often highlighted as an 'indicator of successful learning and teaching', something that is valued and prized. But how does student engagement work?

In this one day symposium, various educational professionals will put forward their take on student engagement. In the morning, research undertaken by The Open University, NUS, HEA, Student Participation in Quality Scotland, will attempt to answer these questions. While in the afternoon, various formal and informal methods and strategies for promoting student engagement will be presented.
