http://www.qaa.ac.uk/newsroom/events/trend-spotting-workshop-making-sense-of-large-information-sources#.WJL3Hk3cu70

Overview

Have you been tasked with producing an engaging report showing key messages of responses to a large consultation?  Do you have to pull together management briefings from large quantities of information?  Are you unsure where to start and how to synthesise key messages? Or, what to do with the data on completion of reporting and how to ensure you adhere to organisational sensitivities and data protection policies? Then, this training session is for you!

This one-day workshop will provide the practical skills for carrying out business enhancement and thematic analysis at your institution. It will look at how you collect sources of information and begin analysis of language-based data (qualitative data) from surveys and consultation responses to collection of reports and case-studies.

This interactive-day designed and delivered by QAA’s experienced data and analysis team will include presentations, group discussions and practical sessions. It will provide you with a toolkit of approaches to qualitative analysis and pattern spotting, ideas for software tools to use and tips on how to produce engaging outputs with your findings.

Who should attend?

The workshop is relevant to anyone wanting to gain and understanding of, or get better at, analysing qualitative data, such as surveys and other unstructured data within a higher education setting.

Agenda

The day's agenda will include presentations and practical sessions on the following areas:

  • Introduction to qualitative data and thematic analysis
  • Bringing together language-based data sources
  • Carrying out data analysis - looking for themes and trends
  • Creating engaging outputs - reports, presentations and documents

Attendees will receive a copy of all training resources (both digitally and in the form of a printed booklet). The delegate fee is £300. To register for this event, please visit our registration site.

FW: QMUL Educational Research Seminar: Managing Competing Agendas in a Transformed HE Landscape

Employability and Graduate Attributes
QMUL Educational Research Seminars 2016-17

Managing competing agendas in a transformed HE landscape: the case for critical engagement with employability and graduate attributes

Dr Finola Farrant, University of Roehampton

Thursday 16 February 2017, 1-2pm, CAPD Seminar Room, Queen Mary University of London, Room 0.15 Scape East, 438-490 Mile End Road, London E1 4GG

About the seminar
Higher education in the UK is going through significant transformation. A number of governmental policies have been put in place that have had – and will continue to have – a major impact on the teaching and learning experience within universities. Simultaneously, student expectations have shifted, with a greater focus on 'value for money', employment readiness and high quality teaching.  At the University of Roehampton a new set of graduate attributes have been introduced that seek to ensure that the needs and expectations of students are met, particularly in relation to employability. This session will reflect on some of the tensions and opportunities created in engaging with employability at a subject level.
Drawing on my experience as programme convenor for criminology and our strategy of embedding employability into curriculum design whilst also seeking to maintain academic rigour, the aim of the session is to encourage participants to consider what it means to have a university degree in contemporary society; to reflect on their own experiences of employability; to explore how employability can be taken forward in different academic programmes; and finally, to share good practice.

About the presenter
Finola Farrant is Programme Convenor and Senior Lecturer in Criminology at University of Roehampton. She has experience as a practitioner, researcher and in policy development in a range of criminal justice settings. Her main areas of research interest include: penology, popular culture, gender and identity, and life story methodologies. She has undertaken extensive research on behalf of a number of Government departments (Ministry of Justice, Home Office, National Offender Management Service, Youth Justice Board, Department of Health and Department for Education); as well as for local government and non-governmental organisations.

FW: Call for papers and workshops at APT 2017 now OPEN

The call for contributions for the 15th Academic Practice and Technology (APT) conference "The future ain't what it used to be: inventing and re-imagining higher education practice" is now open. The conference, co-hosted by the University of Greenwich and London School of Economics (LSE) takes place on July 4th 2017. We invite contributions from colleagues who are imagining and making the futures of higher education – colleagues who are pushing boundaries; evolving teaching and learning practices; developing new curricula; creating new collaborations or markets; analysing big data.

Submission closes Friday 7th April 2017. View information and download the call at: http://tinyurl.com/apt17CfP . We are looking for papers, workshops, innovative sessions and short lighting talks that cover practice, pedagogy and/or research.

If you could share this with your networks and at your institutions, we would be most appreciative.  APT is a great one –day conference, held at a lovely location and brings together a wonderful array of people and ideas.  This year we are focusing on change and how we imagine the future of higher education in that environment.

Cheers

Peter
