Join us for a range of demonstrations and innovations from around the university showcasing technologies to engage learners.

 

This free event aims to enable colleagues from HE institutions, FE colleges and other staff to share their experiences of using technology to engage learners. The programme will include short, interactive sessions on:

 

·         Fully integrating video lectures into undergraduate teaching

·         Developing Blended Learning in Education Studies

·         Using Online Learning materials with law students

·         Using the new Blackboard Portfolio

·         Using iPads in Geography field work

·         Examples of professional quality videos created for staff

·         Developing a winning Blackboard course

LJMU’s Annual Teaching and Learning Conference Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 June 2015

LJMU’s annual Teaching and Learning Conference provides an exciting forum to share and discuss innovative and effective teaching, learning and assessment practices, as well as explore findings from teaching-related research.  On the theme of ‘Locations for learning: where does the learning take place?’, this year’s two-day event will showcase the work of academic and professional service staff across a range of higher education teaching and learning topics.  These include the use of interactive teaching methods, learning technologies and creative approaches to teaching design.   Organised by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education), Professor Peter Byers, with LJMU’s Teaching and Learning Academy, the Conference will be hosted by the Faculty of Arts, Professional and Social Studies at the Mount Pleasant Campus (Redmonds Building).  Vice-Chancellor Professor Nigel Weatherill will open the Conference to our keynote presenter, Alexi Marmot, Professor of Facility and Environment Management at University College London. We conclude day one with the formal launch of LJMU’s Teaching and Learning Academy, by Marva Barnett, Director of the Teaching Resource Center at University of Virginia. Ron Barnett, Emeritus Professor at the Institute of Education, University of London, will open the second day with a keynote presentation. The Conference will close with the announcement, by the Vice-Chancellor, of the Teaching and Learning Excellence Award winners.   The Conference is open to all LJMU staff, students and collaborative partner institutions.  Additionally we warmly invite all colleagues working in post-16 education to attend. The event is free, but places are limited and early registration is advisable.

You may be interested in a forthcoming 'Spotlight on digital capabilities' event to be held at MediaCityUk, University of Salford, on 3rd & 4th June. The deadline for booking is next Friday, 8th May.

This two day event will look at the digital capabilities that staff and students need to live, learn and work and how to challenge the already digitally capable to update and expand their skills. The event will feature new skills and practices in online learning, collaboration and communication, as well as identifying approaches to supporting those who lack confidence and experience in using newer digital tools.

Presentations and discussions will focus on particularly successful approaches and practices, as well as some lessons learnt. The event will also highlight the key findings from the UCISA Digital capabilities survey from Summer 2014 which revealed a rich and diverse range of approaches and practices to supporting staff and student development. On the same theme, Jisc is running a major programme reviewing a number of options for improving support for digital capabilities in the sector. There will be plenty of networking opportunities.

How can we use student feedback to improve learning and teaching?

Student surveys are at the heart of two trends in UK higher education – increased marketisation, and the principle that students are partners in their education. But whether they are seen as mechanisms for the collection of business intelligence, or as vehicles for the student voice, it is crucial that surveys help to improve the processes and practices of learning and teaching. By shedding light on how students experience their studies, by enabling comparison and benchmarking between and within institutions, and by prompting and fostering conversations about learning and teaching, surveys are an important part of the process of quality enhancement.

 

On 4 June 2015 the HEA will hold its annual Surveys for Enhancement Conference in central London. It will bring together research and practice in the development and use of student surveys. Delegates will get a chance to hear from international and national experts, and learn how institutions in the UK are making the most of student feedback.

 

The conference will include a keynote from Dr. Alexander C. McCormick, Director of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), the pioneering US engagement survey that has been used by over 1,500 institutions and completed by 4.5 million students since its launch in 2000, and which has since been adopted around the English-speaking world. Alexander is also Associate Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Indiana University, and Senior Associate Director of their Centre for Postsecondary Research.

 

The conference will also mark the launch of the report of the 2015 Student Academic Experience Survey, a high-profile policy-focused survey run in partnership with the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI). The first part of the conference will be a joint event with HEPI, and will feature a presentation on the survey findings and a keynote from a key figure in UK higher education.

The HEA are currently inviting submissions for the conference, on the theme of “How surveys make a difference”. We would welcome proposals for presentations or workshops on any relevant topic. To submit a proposal, please send an abstract of 100 words and a summary of no more than 500 words to surveys@heacademy.ac.uk  The deadline for proposals is Thursday 7 May.

We are pleased to invite papers for presentation at the Centre for Research in Lifelong Learning (CRLL) one day conference to be held at Glasgow Caledonian University on 9^th September 2015.  The event provides a forum for debate and discussion of the theme of Student Engagement: From Research to Practice.  The conference will take place at Glasgow Caledonian University in the heart of the city of Glasgow. 

Conference Theme and Call for Papers

The CRLL Conference provides a platform for researchers and professionals engaged in Higher Education to address key areas of international concern.  The conference aims to promote discussion and networking opportunities across a broad field of interdisciplinary study. It will also include keynote presentations by distinguished speakers. The Conference expresses the need to explore and understand the implications of the changing landscape of higher education and the impact of this on student engagement, with a particular focus on the links between research and practice.
