In the current HE climate with the emphasis on research it is timely to
also raise the profile of teaching as an aspect of university business
which should have equal status with research, especially where quality
teaching could be argued to enhance university activity and prestige
with the CETL funding.  So, in the final year of the Centres for
Excellence in Teaching and Learning this conference will consider the
concept of the 'scholarship of teaching' particularly in relation to
sharing learning with students.

Both MU CETLs have a wide range of experience of working with
professionals as worker/ learners in different work contexts so the
conference will focus upon teaching and learning from the perspective of
both the learner and the teacher, considering themes around negotiated
learning, learning from practice & work and peer assessment.

Keynote Speakers:
Professor Ray Land, University of Strathclyde: the focus of this keynote
will be on exploring enquiry-led teaching scenarios and research -
teaching linkages involving students as co-producers and fellow
enquirers.

Louise Goldring, Student Engagement officer CEEBL CETL Manchester
University: the focus of this keynote will be on offering suggestions
for a range of practical ways students and staff can work in
partnership, including the use of internships.

A range of workshops from projects funded by the Middlesex CETLs
focusing on the above themes will also be offered.

UKCGE are pleased to announce the forthcoming workshop on Meeting the Needs of... Postgraduate Taught Students.

 

This workshop will examine and focus on how Universities can meet the needs of their postgraduate taught students through guided discussions, exploration of case studies and sharing of good practice. Topics to be covered will include market trends in postgraduate taught student recruitment, what postgraduate students are telling us about their experiences, the QAA consultation on draft new master's degree characteristics reference point challenges in offering premium fee/distance-learning/non-standard masters programmes, and meeting the needs of international and research council funded postgraduate taught students.

 

In addition to a series of interactive workshop sessions and presentations, delegates will also have the opportunity to discuss the issues with colleagues from other institutions in order to understand and develop good-practice within the sector.

 

This programme has been designed for academic staff and administrative staff involved with or managing, supporting or supervising postgraduate taught students including: Graduate Deans, Academic Staff, Research Managers, Administrative and Staff Development personnel.

 

The cost of the workshop is £175 for UKCGE Members and £225 for non-members. This price includes lunch, refreshments and a delegate pack.

The conference takes place in Dublin City University, Dublin, 26th and 27th August 2010.

Submission of abstracts is now open, and will close on 26^th March 2010.  Notification of abstract acceptance is due by 30th April 2010.

The Patchwork Text ('a radical re-assessment of coursework assignments') was a three-year research project integrating teaching, assessment and collaborative learning. It involved a range of disciplines and three institutions: Anglia Polytechnic University (now Anglia Ruskin University), Nottingham Trent University and Cambridge University. The Project's work was published in a special edition of the SEDA journal Innovations in Education and Teaching International Volume 40 Number 2 in 2003.

 

The key ideas of the project – an assignment built up gradually through a series of contrasted writing tasks over a period of weeks and shared with other students in small group discussions, 'stitched together' by a synoptic, reflective commentary – were powerful enough to live on after the end of the project. They seem to have found a particular resonance within the e-portfolio community of practitioners, as this form of technology lends itself to collaborative and reflective learning using diverse evidence.

 

This meeting will be highly interactive and participative, with maximum opportunities for networking.
