Friday 19 June 2015

09.30 – 15.30

Holborn Bars

138-142 Holborn, London EC1N 2NQ

This event is an opportunity to take part  in what will essentially be a ‘masterclass’ in topical credit issues. FW: Registration Open: Enhancing Student Learning Through Innovative Scholarship Conference

Enhancing Student Learning Through Innovative Scholarship: The Role of Teaching Focused Academics in driving the evolution of HE

16th  and 17th July 2015, Durham University

With the increasing focus brought to bear on teaching in higher education in recent years, the scholarship of teaching and learning has risen in prominence, with an increasing number of Universities actively engaged. A key element in this is the role of academic staff on teaching focused contracts – often known as Teaching Fellows. A recent study by the HEA puts this issue into context:

“HESA data for 2012-13 show that just over 25% of academic staff were on teaching-only contracts. The report shows too that there is a predominance of teaching-only contracts among part-time academics, and that while an increasing proportion of teaching is undertaken in universities and colleges that do not have research degree awarding powers and do not receive significant amounts of research funding, a clear hierarchy exists, with research widely seen as ‘more important’ – for institutional reputation and career advancement than teaching. There remains, the report says, a significant a gap between policy and implementation regarding promotion policies in higher education institutions, and few identifiable promotions to senior positions solely on the basis of

teaching excellence.”

To raise the profile of teaching focused academics in the research-intensive climate, it is vital to raise the profile of teaching as a valued activity institutionally across the HE sector. The best way to achieve this is through the promotion of the innovative scholarly activity being undertaken by teaching focused academics. This first meeting of a national teaching fellow network is therefore a forum to share innovative scholarship across disciplinary boundaries and to develop a national voice for teaching focused academics.

Conference themes include:

·         Embedding and Enhancing Scholarship

·         Working with Students as Partners

·         Student Transitions

·         Career Pathways for Teaching Focused Academic Staff

·         Scholarship to Support Student Learning

A draft conference agenda and book of abstracts are available here:

Interest in this conference has been exceptionally high with over 20 UK HEIs and 4 international HEIs presenting at the meeting. Registration is open here http://tinyurl.com/o797fe2  until 20th June 2016 at 1pm.  Places are limited so we’d encourage you to sign up as soon as possible.

FW: the next TLC webinar is approaching

Teaching and Learning Conversations (TLC)

Dear colleagues,

Patrick Baughan, Senior Lecturer in Educational Development at the Department of Learning Enhancement and Development at City University London will lead TLC webinar on Tuesday the 26th of May, 12-1pm UK time during which we will discuss Sustainability in higher education.

Information:

The purpose of this webinar is to discuss an empirical study in which I invited university staff employed in the field of educational development to provide their views about sustainability in higher education. The aims of the study were to: (a) seek educational developer views about whether sustainability (particularly sustainability in the curriculum) could form a more central part of their own work; (b) invite comment about the current Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) Sustainable development in higher education policy. The study seeks to offer some rich data from the ‘educational developer voice’ about sustainability, which could be useful for informing future versions of relevant policy, but that might also be helpful in casting light on the relationship between educational development and sustainable development. The project was undertaken by way of nine semi-structured interviews at six different (UK based) universities. In light of its outcomes, I will explain that educational developers offer varied conceptions and accounts of sustainability, and different views about its role and position in relation to university curricula. I will argue that sustainability is an area that should not be imposed on educational developers but that it provides an opportunity for that community. In addition, policy needs to provide more direction about sustainability in teaching, curricula, and other areas of pedagogy, and here too educational developer perspectives could be valuable and should be sought out.

We hope you will be able to join us.

How to join the webinar

About Teaching & Learning Conversations

TLC is an exciting cross-institutional collaboration to provide open CPD opportunities for everybody teaching and/or supporting learning in Higher Education. TLC  brings together colleagues from different disciplines, institutions and countries. TLCs are also open to students in HE and we are very interested in including students’ contributions to the programme.

Together, we discuss and debate a variety of current teaching and learning topics in a series of webinars which provide a great opportunity to reflect on and share good practice and to find out what is happening beyond your own institution the more global HE landscape.

All webinars are open to the wider community to join.

Please feel free to share the link to the TLC programme and individual webinars with others who might also be interested. Further information and recordings from previous webinars can be found at http://www.celt.mmu.ac.uk/flex/tlc.php

FW: Retention and success seminar

Dear Colleagues,

I’d like to invite you to participate in a free, 60-minute webinar on Tuesday 2nd June at 12.30pm (BST) about student monitoring and information to enhance student retention and success.  For further details and to book a place please go to:  https://hobsons.webex.com/hobsons/onstage/g.php?d=641665593&t=a.

As you know, I have been researching student retention and success for some time now, and found student engagement in the curriculum and belonging to their academic programmes are crucial.  This involves a mainstream and inclusive approach, but it does need to be underpinned by data: in particular knowing which students are not engaging, using a range of engagement indicators.

Starfish tools provide institutions with a means to connect together different information and data sources, and to proactively follow-up and engage with students.  The webinar will talk about the issues and demonstrate the tools.  I have been learning and reviewing Starfish for about a year, and I think it offers a potentially useful solution to many UK and Irish institutions, and I thought you might find it interesting and useful in your continuing work to improve the student experience and student satisfaction and outcomes.

With best wishes

Liz

"The Paradigm Shift: Refocusing on the Student"

eLearning 2.0 is a lively international conference exploring technology-enhanced learning and social media technologies. The conference is a collaborative space for educators, students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and policy makers to share their eLearning classroom successes, as well as new developments in their research and workplace. The main theme of this year's conference is "The Paradigm Shift: Refocusing on the Student". This educational paradigm shift is fuelled by the unprecedented access that students now have to information coupled with a view of learning as a constructive process consisting of selecting, organising and integrating information.

The theme broadens the discussion from last year's theme of "Flipping the Classroom." It seeks to showcase any use of technology to enhance learning which requires us to "think differently." The conference seeks contributions on evolving pedagogical approaches, as well as to raise the profile of research in technology-enhanced learning; spread good practice in the use of technology to enhance learning; and facilitate collaboration between practitioners, researchers, and policy makers.
